CREATURE

Project Description

CREATURE-a shapeshifting journey into butoh wonderland

A new butoh dance theatre work that delves dangerously into the subconscious, archetypal journey from innocence to maturity.

The inaugural Theatre event from ‘ The Space Between Performance Collective’; CREATURE is a triptych of psychological landscapes created through Butoh (a Japanese Contemporary Movement Theatre that is an explosive convention-shattering performance art that redefines the limits of dance and theater). Audiences are taken on the archetypal journey from Innocence to Maturity: Through ‘The Void’ –Alice’s Rabbit Hole, Dorothy’s tornado, to find themselves in the new technicolour, psychedelic world where everything is unknown and nothing is as it seems(Menagerie of Innocence), concluding with  a solo performance  in which the individual emerges irrevocably changed from the journey (Emergence). Seven female performers journey inside an ever changing world constructed by Paula Van Beek from projections, light, scaffolding and turf supported by original soundscapes by UK composer Norm Skipp and costume by Llama Kendall. CREATURE is directed and designed by Gabrielle New.

CREATURE-the photographic exhibition, by Robert Spillane , will take place concurrently .

At: Theatre Works- 14 Acland Street, St Kilda.

The Space Between is a new Melbourne based performance collective founded in 2009. As the name suggests, the collective is interested in inhabiting the liminal, the border zone-not in terms of perpetuating divisions or dualities, but rather exploring the ways in which perceived dualities mesh and interweave. In this way we explore, through Butoh, Bodyweather and Physical Theatre ‘the space between’ self and other, audience and performer, body and place/environment, interior psyche and exterior action, sensory perception and movement, dance and sound, sculpture and performance etc. We aim to produce new, exciting, Integrated, challenging theatre works at an exceptional standard of excellence that profoundly impact and stimulate audiences and is socially and culturally relevant to our time and place by working on many levels; the intra-psychic, the personal, the interpersonal, the societal and global.
