TON OF WOOL
Project Description
DID YOU MISS OUT?
not to worry - like ms.gusset yarns & fibres on facebook, or join the ravelry group, and we'll let you know when yarn & fibre will be available!
Processing wool in Australia is fast becoming a dying art, and wool needs to stay in Australia for creation from sheep to skein in order to support small farmers and micro business.
The successful project will ensure that your money will be put into directly paying the farmer, scour, fibre processor, mill and transport companies. The whole project occurs within the 03 area code - grown in Tasmania, processed and milled in Victoria.
1 Ton Of Wool - Why so much?
1 ton of wool is being processed because that's the smallest amount we can get through a commercial scour. We're a grain of sand in their usual beach of processing, so we're rather lucky to get a foot in their door.
Cormo
Cormo is a breed of sheep developed in Tasmania, which is akin to the finest vanilla icecream that you'd cross town for - it's that good. Cormo is a super soft next to skin wool that's also incredibly strong and fine - for the nerds amongst us, 21 to 23 micron.
Mulesing & Sustainability
All wool for the project is being sourced from the one farm in Tasmania, which stocks sheep at a lower number than conventional farms, encourages clean native pasture, increased sheep nutrition and excellent soil health. Fly strike isn't an issue on the farm due to low temperatures, so mulesing doesn't happen.
Combed Top & Yarn
The combed top and yarn that you choose as your reward will be of exceptional quality, and suitable for producing heirloom quality work. Combed top at the end stages of processing resembles cream, so Cormo top will be the equivalent of King Island Cream - we're talking a thick, luscious, decadent fibre that's going to be wonderful for spinning, felting, and other textile adventures.
The yarn will be a 100% Cormo jumper weight - we're aiming for a 10 ply aran, which is one of the most popular weights, particularly in the USA.
Your Pledge
Your pledge of money will be used to finance the bare minimum - $33,000 will pay the farmer, scour, & transport in full, and processing for roughly a third of the wool. We're going to be over the moon if we reach target - but every dollar earned will count toward getting the full amount done and reaching you, our supporters.
Issues With Pledging?
Quite a few folk have contact us about issues with pledges - Pozible have given us the following feedback, so we hope that dampens your fear a little! If there are issues with your pledge, or you want to change a pledge after it's been made, please don't hesitate to email info@pozible.com.au .
We recognise that people may have reservations about using their credit card. Pozible does not hold credit card/debit card details at all, we use one of Australias largest third party processing companies (called eway) to authorise, store and process credit card/debit card transactions on behalf of Pozible.
Since we started accepting credit cards/debit cards, Pozible has facilitated over 6500 transactions and nearly $500k worth.
We only use Facebook to capture an email address and profile pic - no other information is shared. This is simply to make the registration process quick and easy.
