Project Description

My name is Andrew Johnstone. I am a publisher, designer and (amateur) photographer from Sydney, Australia. I run several different projects that are all based around showcasing and promoting talented creatives from around the world: The Semi-Permanent creative events, the Design is Kinky website, Empty art magazine and Take photography magazine.


The project that I am focusing on in this situation is Take magazine. Take is a photography magazine that was first published in mid-2011. At this point we have one issue published and another being printed. Take is about raw and real photography, it focuses on documentary style photography of all varieties. Take showcases work from established and upcoming photographers with a passion for what they do. Take also looks to do things differently to other magazines by having little, if any, advertising.


TAKE ICELAND is a project that I have been wanting to do for some time. The idea is fairly simple. I would like to travel to Iceland and meet with talented Icelandic photographers to document their, what I believe, unique style. Having travelled to Iceland a couple times I have been struck by the beauty and uniqueness of its landscape and people. I believe that the isolation and landscape has a large part to play in their singular style and would like to explore the relationship that Icelandic photographers have with their landscape and country.

What I find will then be put together into an article or full issue of an upcoming Take magazine. We will look to gather visually stunning photography from Icelandic photographers and will also document the photographers themselves, weaving everything together into what I believe will be an exciting issue of the magazine.

I want to interact as much as possible with the projects supporters and along the way I will be documenting the progress of the trip. I will set up an exclusive blog for all supporters and will document the journey with photos and videos, providing exclusive interviews with the photographers that i speak with. I am very keen to get people thoughts and feedback along the way.

All funds from POZIBLE will be used towards the project. Including airfares, accommodation, and other travel items. Any extra will go towards the publishing costs of the magazine and the separate 'supporter only' book that I will also be creating.

I am designer, publisher, event organiser and keen (amateur) photographer based out of Sydney, Australia. For the last seven years I have been publishing Empty magazine and have recently started a photography magazine called Take. I also co-created and run the Semi-Permanent design events and the design site, Design is Kinky which has been online since 1998. Yes kids, there was internet back then!

I have always been very interested in showcasing and exposing talented creatives of all types and all my projects are based around this goal.
