The Future of Fashion Graduate Showcase is the inaugural fashion exhibition of design students from the University of Technology, Sydney. The exhibition is opened by the live fashion runway show, following by a 7 day show space which enables industry as well as the general public to engage with the works on show. The UTS showcase has become an important platform for Australian fashion’s next crop of young gun designers. The showcase will feature the talents of students from 3 areas of work; fashion collection, textiles and media. The opening night is the 4th of December 2012 to be held at the Great Hall, at UTS City Campus. The opening night is a ticketed event, with tickets to be released closer to the event.

What are we Crowdsourcing for?

As a student body, we are raising funds to produce a catalogue of the showcase which will become a key part of all students’ portfolios as they start their careers. As all our projects are self funded over the year, we are looking to family, friends as well as the greater community to help in supporting the show. We are looking to raise at a minimum, $5,000 for the catalogue, ideally we need $10, 000. The Pozible profile is one part of our fund raising efforts and have set a target of $2,000.

Here are some of the projects that the students are working on.

Student Profiles:
Denisse Vera
Unidentified Lines is an exploration of the contrasting perceptions surrounding the existence of the Ancient Nazca geoglyphs in Peru. Were the lines created as an ancient aerial calendar or as landing strips for spacecrafts?

The ancient vs. extra-terrestrial views are contrasted within Unidentified Lines through the incorporation of ancient Macrame techniques and new-age sublimation printing processes, which add a sense of mysticism and depth.

The geoglyphs are and will forever remain as Unidentified Lines.

Minette Shuen
Externalising the inner beauty and complexity of the human anatomy; peeling back layers of the skin and examining the soft tissue and muscles structures that lie beneath.

Gemma Anastasiou
The basis for the collection is taken from research into sustainable design practice, in particular the Slow Fashion movement. The ‘bloom’ is used as a metaphor throughout the collection to represent the relationship which fashion has with the natural world. The materials used throughout the collection have been permeated with plant matter as a way of creating colour and texture as well as producing clothing which, in itself will naturally change with time.

Alexandra Lawrie
Speed Seeker is a womenswear collection that explores the concept of ‘the motorcycle as a symbol of modernity’ – drawing inspiration from traditional motorcycle jackets, the mechanics of the motorcycle and the track patterns of motorcycle tires. The collection conveys a sleek and ultra modern aesthetic through experimental knitwear techniques that combines jacquard knit patterns, metallic Lurex yarns and clear and metallic foil surface treatments.

EXALT by Sandra Cal

Exalt is a creative direction and production studio dedicated to creating fashion film and photography. By providing production, creative direction and styling, it acts as a platform to promote a multimedia approach to fashion imaging.Exalt focuses on the potential of post-production to convey one visual concept differently amongst the two mediums of film and photography. Light projection technology and photo manipulation have been just a couple of techniques used in previous shoots to explore how styling, lighting and movement can intersect to create visual narratives.

2011's graduate showcase was a sell-out; we are hoping to continue the success of the annual event and live-up to the high level of innovation and creativity that UTS design student are renowned for.
