Please read my profile before you go any further: it will help you to understand my motivation to undertake this project. If it is a success, I'd like to be undertaking projects like this one at least twice yearly.
PROJECT FOCUS
The project I want to undertake is in two parts.
First, I am seeking to work with Anjali House, a refuge for street children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, as part of their program to hold photo workshops with the children, leading to exhibitions online and in the real world, to publicise their efforts to get children off the streets and into caring homes where they can learn, play and become fully empowered human beings. Their website is at http://www.anjali-house.com
Second, as a photojournalist who is deeply interested in the human condition, I would like to investigate the social conditions that surround these particular children and those in the surrounding area - I suspect that all street children come from the same kinds of social roots, but that each of them has been shaped by the particular conditions into which they, individually, were born.
BUDGET
It is difficult to break down the budget since there are numerous variables that need to be ironed out, many of which will only be established once the project is already underway. In fact, these kinds of projects have a big serendipitous element that could suddenly transform them into more than one bargained on. In my experience, projects like this often start changing and expanding from the moment one sets foot on the turf. So, to be fair to my supporters and to the people I want to work with, I am guesstimating that that the costs will be in the region of about $9000 to $10000. To do justice to it, I am going to set the target at $10000. Most of this money will go toward the costs of travel, somewhat less will go into accommodation and living expenses - the expedition should not be longer than about a month or so.
EXPERIENCE
I have worked with children previously on less formal projects that I've funded myself. One of my favorites was a project documenting the communities of the impoverished Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu. In 2009/10 I made a few trips to Port Vila, the capital, situated on the main island of Efate, and produced a book entitled, "Face of Efate - a Portrait of Ni-Vanuatu," which featured community life, with a special emphasis on children. I even managed to feature ex-President Kolkot Matas Kelekele. It was my first attempt at producing a book of this nature. I am hoping that I will be able to produce a more sophisticated one for the project that I am working on now. You can preview my work in Vanuatu at http://www.pbase.com/cwest/vanuatu_2009
