Cognition Short Film

Cognition is a science fiction film set in 2070 about Vance, a systems code writer and computer programmer who already sold his soul together with an incalculably important code in return for boundless wealth and in so doing endangered the future of the human race. The code was designed to data mine all of our information from online but now has spawned a system that acts as a future police. Vance must carry out his next plan, complete his next project and escape their watchful eye all at once for his only chance at redemption. He is the only one who can uncreate the system he created and the magnitude of the risk is immense.
Cognition is my ultimate science fiction short film with an online interactive game as a component. The film aims to recreate Perth, Western Australia as a dark, ‘dystopian’ high technology world similar to Minority Report but with several differences. I have always loved science fiction, games and thrillers, and all put together my team and I hope to create our take on a future world with advanced technologies affecting our society while telling a very human story along the way.

The story comes from a time when I was studying at Murdoch University in Western Australia, and can be summed up as a question. Could a computer ever be 'plugged' into a persons brain so that we could 'understand' the universe and rise to some higher era combining ourselves with machines and what might that look like? I studied science fiction by chance for a whole semester, loved it, and Cognition comes from that time. This is an ambitious project with great challenges that could ultimately set it aside from most other shorts, but we also need to be sensible and simple, and well paced in the edit suite - our plan is to strike a chord with our Australian roots, but also with our target audience, the die-hard science fiction fans.

How The Funds Will Be Used
As an independent film making group, we want to create an immersive world that strikes a balance between an electric fast pace and great visuals but with imaginative ways to achieve a sci-fi world on a tight budget that means we must shoulder a lot of the work to bring this film to life, but seriously we are aiming to do science fiction justice and that's where the money will be spent. There will be robots, drones, and with visual effects and production design inspired by anime like Ghost In The Shell, and futuristic weapons that really do blow stuff up (think MIB) combined with a complex storyline told between the film and an interactive game designed by the film-makers to flesh out the back story, I believe Cognition will do well at local and overseas film festivals.
