Pride WA Inc. is committed to encouraging the cultural expression and celebrating, championing and supporting the rights and freedoms of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and other same sex attracted people living in Western Australia.
Pride WA is a not-for-profit, membership based arts organisation that runs the annual PRIDEFEST festival. Pride WA was originally established in 1989 as Perth’s first gay and lesbian focused organisation, and has gone on to become one of the Perth most diverse and forward thinking organisations. Pride WA has run the festival for 23 years, with a strong focus on the arts, local music, community issues and politics. Our mission is to; encourage the cultural expression and celebrate, champion and support the rights and freedoms of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and other same sex attracted people living in Western Australia.
PRIDEFEST is an exciting festival showcasing the arts, culture, politics and rich history of WA’s diverse sexuality and gender community. The festival runs during October and features a wide range of large-scale events, performances, exhibitions and activities that will draw crowds from around Australasia to Perth.
In 2012 Pride WA engaged national performers and added a variety of new agencies including Muse Bureau, City of Vincent and Chevron to their list of partners which already included Lotterywest, City of Perth, OutinPerth and RTRfm. Bringing corporate and community partners on board was important as it gave a larger exposure to not only their events, but also events run by smaller community groups.
PRIDEFEST attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of Northbridge and Perth every year. Over the past three years Northbridge has hosted over 150,000 spectators to watch the Pride Parade. 2012 saw over 5000 people from all over Australia attend the City of Perth Pride Fairday at Russell Square Park which is arugably WA's most enjoyed LGBTIQ day and saw a range of new festival events added to the calendar, all of which were a success.
PRIDEFEST is made up of four sets of events, Fairday, Pride WA's Festival events, the Community Festival and the PRIDEFEST Parade. Each part of the festival celebrates the community, the work that it does and the people who are invovled.
Running PRIDEFEST costs in excess of $250,000.00 and is run soley by a group of volunteers and relys completely on funding and donations to survive. As a membership organisation rely on our members to support us by attending our events and supporting our community. Money from this campaign will be used to assist us to complete the groundwork for the 2013 program including payment of hire fees, deposits, graphic design, marketing and community consultation.
