Hello! I am a clarinetist based in US, and my dream is to become a dancing clarinetist!

I believe art is a form of teaching. As a musician, painter, as well as dancer, I love learning all art-related genre. I've recently been accepted into Stockhausen Foundation and will center on composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and his work titled: Der kleine Harlekin (The Little Harlequin) that was composed specifically for Suzanne Stephens as a dancing clarinetist. Suzanne Stephens has invited me to study and research this important work as her successor.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why AM I doing this?

My professional interest is to promote solo clarinet music by collaborating with other artists and art forms such as the marriage between music and dance as intended by Karlheinz Stockhausen, which is uniquely different than how other composers worked with music and dance. The intent of this collaboration is to help engage a wider variety of art forms and provide them with unique experiences that provoke deeper forms of thought.

During this project, I seek to better understand the impact of music and dance as they are interlinked in the form that Stockhausen created in the Der kleine Harlekin piece. Through this discovery process, my intention is to effectively commission this form of music & dance from new composers and present it in a meaningful way to audiences. I believe it will influence observers, in a unique way, if presented as intended by Stockhausen. It will also continue the legacy of Stockhausen’s art form, which I have faith will lead to new discoveries by artists during the creative process.

Der kleine Harlekin takes a unique approach by combining a solo musical instrumental part with dance whereby the clarinetist is both the performer and dancer.

Stockhausen employed traditional and extended clarinet techniques in Der kleine Harlekin, as he attempted to transform the concept of unaccompanied clarinet through its integration with dance.

My Professional Development

“The angels are portrayed as musicians-singers and instrumentalists. In the same way that everything in the universe was created for everyone, and will sooner or later be discovered by everyone, I thus also envision that the final destiny of every human being is to become a singing and playing angel: a homo angelicus.” This is my beloved quote from Stockhausen.

When discovering his music, it reminds me that each human being has the potential to profoundly change the world with his and her talents.  When properly presented and understood the work, it allows the listener to learn about his form of music that inevitably stimulates the questioning of our existence at a deeper level. I believe his music will influence people to question their existence and lead to discoveries that will improve the world.

My goal is to further grow as a professional community artist that will influence and create collaborative programming. I believe my obligation is to influence audiences with current artistic expressions such as the combination of music & dance in one artistic genre.

It is of highest importance to impress upon and create awareness to the public that music and arts are essential for spiritual wellbeing, community, and human creative development. This project will allow me to grow academically, musically and as a human being so that I can more effectively influence our communities in the near future.

Outcomes

1. Recitals & Lectures:
In the spring 2015, I will hold recitals in FOUR countries featuring my research and interpretation of  Der kleine Harlekin. These recitals will be presented to performers, teachers, composers and community members of all areas in USA, Canada, Thailand, China and Taiwan.

2. Commissions
I have commissioned this marriage of music dance genre to bring new repertoires into the present day with the intention of inspiring new works using this unique style of creation. I have been in contact with some composers, who are interested in collaborating and creating this kind of composition, to which I hope to deliver as a performer in the near future.

3. Recording-audio/video
During my residency, I will make a professional video, including my performance, learning process and interview with Suzanne Stephens.
