Music Analysis Summer School
*Note that accommodation is still available at Medley Hall. Please contact the course convenor at matthew.lorenzon at gmail dot com if you would like to book.*Recognising the shortage of music analysis teaching in Australia, we decided to bring together the most insightful musical minds we could find to pick apart scores for a week. The lecture-driven course will be open to all. There will be no prerequisites and no assessment, just music and curiosity in the urbane surroundings of Melbourne's Medley Hall.
Participants may include, but are not limited to: Undergraduates who want a taste of high-level music analysis or want fresh insights into the music they perform, postgraduate students working in the field, as well as staff and members of the public who want to hear and study music in new and surprising ways.
We have assembled some of the most inspiring music analysis teachers in the country to provide courses and single lectures in diverse topics from the common practice period (baroque/classical/romantic) to today.
Courses:
Richard Cohn (Yale/Sydney): Meter
David Larkin (Sydney): Sonata forms
Martin Greet (Melbourne): Schenkerian analysis
Alistair Noble (independent/Brisbane): Post-tonal analysis
Sketch studies lecture series:
Alan Davison (University of New England): Schubert/Liszt
Allan Walker (independent/Melbourne): Keith Humble
Elliott Gyger (Melbourne): Analysis and the compositional process
Michael Hooper (UNSW): Performance analysis
Schedule:

Prerequisites: While the only prerequisite is a desire to sit through a week of music analysis, some basic music theory will help you get the most out of the week. We expect participants to be able to read and describe musical notation. Cohn's course requires some familiarity with terminology associated with meter, but not too much, as his approach will involve unlearning assumptions about how meter works. Basic knowledge of functional harmony will help you understand Greet's course in Schenkerian analysis. Noble's post-tonal analysis course will explain music in terms of pitch-class set theory, so again your understanding of music will be built from the ground up.
