Get Alex to the international stage

(Hemisphere together at last...well, almost)
--
It's every barbershoppers dream to make it on the international stage. In 2013 I have the opportunity of making my debut on the international stage as a member of a quartet called Hemisphere.
Hemisphere is comprised of 3 members from the USA and me here in Melbourne, Australia. I need your help in getting me to the USA to qualify to compete with Hemisphere. Your generous contributions will cover the cost of my return airfares.
I continue to dedicate time developing myself as an educator and musician, using these talents to help enrich the lives of singers across the country. With your help, I can take another step in my barbershop journey.

(Alex Coaching the Canberra Chordsmen in 2012)
To be able to compete on the international stage in 2013, I need your help in raising funds to get me to the USA in February where Hemisphere will compete in the Dixie District Spring Contest in Gadsden, Alabama on 8 and 9 March to qualify us to compete in the Barbershop Harmony Societies' International Quartet Contest in Toronto, Canada in July.
To make this young barbershoppers dream become a reality I need to raise a minimum of $1800 to cover the cost of my flights from Melbourne to Charleston (where Hemisphere will rehearse) and flights home from Atlanta, Georgia (where I will depart from after the Dixie District Spring Contest). While in Charleston I will be staying with Derek Street, the lead singer from Hemisphere, to keep living costs to a minimum. The quartet will then be saving on airfares by driving the almost 7 hour drive from Charleston to Gadsden to compete. Any donations beyond $1800 will help cover the general living costs and accommodation costs while in Gadsden.
As part of the journey towards the international stage, I will be traveling to the USA twice in 2013. With your generous support of my first trip in February, I will be able to make the return journey in July to compete in Toronto.

Donations of all shapes and sizes are a huge help and I cannot express my sincere gratitude for your support!
All sponsors will receive regular updates on our progress during rehearsals before I head to Charleston, while I am in Charleston and of our appearance in Gadsden on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 March - it will be an amazing journey!

This beautiful thing called barbershop...
Barbershop is an addictive and truly remarkable musical art form which I dedicate a lot of my time, love and passion to. I was first introduced to this musical style back in high school and since then it has taken me around the country and the world. It has enabled me to work with some of the most amazing people I have ever met. It's an art form that appeals to people from all walks of life and continues to enrich the lives of young and old.
How Hemisphere was formed..
I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to attend the annual BHS Harmony University in St Joseph, Missouri in July 2012 where I was enrolled as a student of Directors' School. While there I received tuition from some of the societies best educators and formed lasting relationships with a new group of fellow musicians. One of these relationships was with a young director from Charleston, South Carolina by the name of Derek Street. During our week at Harmony University we took every opportunity available to sing with one another as we discovered a rather uncanny blend between our voices and one that was a little too exciting not to explore further.

(Alex and Derek singing with a scratch quartet at Harmony University)
We (and possibly somewhat naively) decided to form a quartet. This quartet would include myself on tenor, Derek on lead and Robert Rund (the co-director from Derek's chorus, the Palemetto Vocal Project) on baritone. The search for a bass began and ended with Tony Carlini from New York. Derek and Robert have been singing together in quartets in South Carolina and discovered an electric blend between their voices. Robert and Tony have sung together before in a number of successful quartets.
Our plan of attack...
So, why form a quartet with one man in New York, two men in South Carolina and a bloke down in Australia you might ask? Well, we decided to try and make that dream of competing on the international stage a reality in 2013 and we truly believe that with the talent and experience within the quartet, we have what it takes to get there! The only way to do this would be to qualify to compete in the 75th BHS International Quartet Contest in Toronto, Canada in July 2013 by competing at a district competition in the spring. After discussion between the members of this newly formed quartet, we have decided to compete at the Dixie District Spring Contest on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 March in Gadsden, Alabama!

(Alex and Derek rehearsing via Skype)
Rehearsals via Skype began in September and we have put together a set of 7 songs that each of us are busily learning individually and rehearsing via Skype on a weekly basis. Both Tony and I will travel to Charleston for 9 days of intense rehearsals as a quartet from Wednesday 27 February before driving to Gadsden to compete. Once through the Dixie District Spring Contest, our sights will be set on preparation to compete in Toronto in July.
Please help this dream become a reality!

Whatever the song, I want to see it in your repertoire! If you're not singing or not currently in an ensemble, make sure you do something about that but you will receive a recording of Hemisphere via email!
