the reading room
At the reading room (http://www.thereadingroom-renewadelaide.blogspot.com) we like it lo-fi, really. The space we occupy is very minimal, with a bare floor, one powerpoint, no ceiling lights and an unfinished roof. It has a certain charm, but we'd also like to give artists a place to display artworks with enough light, and at the moment, it's a little dim in here. We'd like to have enough light to read by too. Seems sensible yeah? As a non-profit venture however, we have no money to spend on better lighting, and have so far been stuck with some rope light I found at home and some lamps donated by our lovely supporters. Our plan is for ceiling hung lights which will make the artwork visible and the books readable. We're also looking to improve the safety of our power supply, turn the space into a wifi hotspot, and make it more flood-proof.
If you've never been to the reading room, or know nothing about what we are and what we do, it's pretty simple - it's like your loungeroom, but it is in the city. We have lounges and tables, bookshelves filled with books and zines. We have an urn to make your own tea, and occasionally someone lovely brings us cookies. We hold regular art exhibitions, spoken word nights, and sometimes we bust out the odd board game. We are staffed entirely by volunteers, and we access the space courtesy of Renew Adelaide (http://www.renewadelaide.worpress.com). We pay no rent, and we make no money.
That's where you and your great generosity comes in! If you can spare a little cash, we'll be able to bring light to the reading room, maybe even install a safer powerpoint, and, hope of all hopes, get a wireless connection to help all those keen students who like to use the space! We can but dream anyway. Your little bit, combined with another's small contribution, and another's etc, could combine to make everyone who uses the reading room very very happy. And you'll feel all warm and fuzzy too. We all win.
