Sydney Guild residency outcome

Oxford Riot/Songs for a...
is a project I am working on through a Sydney Guild artistic residency from the 24th September 2012. It will culminate in a 3-day exhibition/event opening on Friday 2nd November that will rely on viewer interaction through karaoke based on punk-rock songs, where each participant becomes a brief rock-star for the duration of a track.

Utilising the Sydney Guild studios unique vantage on Oxford Streets party strip, a projection-screen will be placed on the awning of the first-floor gallery, along with speakers, that will broadcast the filmed participants to the public below.

The post-event 'exhibition' will be the detritus of the karaoke and opening night that will remain in place through the duration of the show, which will then be documented for a series of photographic editions that show the 'comedown' of the punk-rock mayhem as it occurred on the opening night.

What your contribution will fund

-purchase of a rear projection screen to view the filmed event from Oxford st.
-hiring a HD digital data projector
-material toward the construction of a stage where the audience gets wild
-disco lighting (because it's "DISCO LIGHTING)
-hiring karaoke equipment (karaoke machine, microphones, sound system)
-printing of a series of photographic works that document the aftermath of the event

Extraneous info

This residency follows my recent Master of Fine Art exhibition at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney that relied on social engagement, or a network, that was created using seating/sculpture, digital media, and audio of Anarchist thinkers. Oxford Riot/Songs for a... follows this inquiry with the use of karaoke and a 'club' environment, using only punk rock music that shares similarities with the earlier Anarchist texts used.

Music is a tool that effectively brings people together and more broadly within subcultures, gives individuals a collective 'common-ground' that has in the past been formative on my own development and placement within the 'wider-world'. Using music from a specific 'anti-social' subculture, the Oxford Riot/Songs for a...project aims toward an artwork that is a fun environment and inclusive of all that attend.
