The Youth Food Movement is a group of passionate 20 and 30 somethings from all walks of life: nutritionists, activists, tv presenters, university tutors, media buyers, fashion designers, sociologists, communications specialists, event organisers, government lobbyists, chefs, writers, educators, change makers. The common interest that brings us all together is GOOD FOOD and our food future.
Our aim is to cultivate a nation-wide movement of informed young adults who are passionate about good food, so that together we can have a collective voice to demand a secure and fair food system.

The YFM team pour hours, days and weeks of their own time into creating a better food system for all of us by holding events which educate and change behaviour, and influencing policy decisions. We need to do more of it, and your pledge will help us keep doing this work.
The Ride On Lunch
YFM is organising two rides, on the 20th & 27th October, of 50 riders on each day.
We will provide a 10 bike marshalls for each ride, including a bike mechanic and a qualified bike leader, so our riders can enjoy a hassle free and safe ride. A route has been carefully planned along Sydney's cycle ways which will allow us ride at the 'conversational pace' the Ride On Lunch is famous for.
At 5 secret locations, riders will hear from food producers and lovers who have a story to tell about their relationship with food. We will also get hands on learning how to change our habits and support a resilient local food system.
The day is fully catered with breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon snacks and drinks all provided.
We are working tirelessly to make this year's Ride On the best yet.. scouting venues, mapping the route, deliberating over the menu and uncovering the best stories of Sydney's local producers and foodies.

Why this is more than just a ticket price..
Despite appearances in the super slick video above (thanks Pete and Mikey) YFM is a grassroots, volunteer-led organisation which is completely independent of traditional methods of funding.
We don't charge a membership fee and it's important to us that we keep our events as affordable as possible, so they are accessible to everyone. We are not funded by any companies or other bodies.
We have a knack for putting on awesome events - that everyone wants a piece of - and have a huge social impact and a tiny environmental impact. But we can only manage a couple each year.
We need these funds to keep doing what we do best - but more of it and more often.
We want to build and maintain community, responding to the huge appetite we're seeing for what we do.
Are we capable of doing this?
YFM have been putting on events (with zero funding) which reconnect people with food for over two years. We have a knack for putting on events that are awesome to attend but also have a huge impact on everyone who comes. The Ride On Lunch is just one of these events, so do check out the others below.

UPDATE: Ride on the 27th is SOLD OUT!

Reel Food Nights is a series of film nights where we invite people to watch, eat and think. The first saw 260 people pack into a pedal-powered pop-up cinema in Food Connect's warehouse. They were treated to dinner from the the Veggie Patch Van, took part in a discussion with farmers and restauranteurs about the future of farming in Australia, and watched an awesome one-hour documentary about young farmers - The Greenhorns. The mood created on the night was electric and everyone walked away buzzing with a shared optimism and keenness to get stuck in.

The Source and YFM teamed up to bring Passata Day to life. On the day, 25 young people produced 300 bottle of tomato puree, and learned the beauty of eating seasonally while passing on the Italian tradition of tomato preservation. The day had a lasting impact on everyone who took part, and many more people have been inspired by the story of Passata Day through presentations and this video:
We are actively campaigning for better decisions on the issues that affect our food system. YFM were the only youth group to be represented in the recent National Food Plan public consultation, are working on putting together an alternative 'People's Food Plan' and we took to the streets this year to lend our voices to the 'No Coal Seam Gas' rally - a historic moment of co-operation between farmers and green groups.

UPDATE: Ride on the 27th is SOLD OUT!
The Ride On will cost us $4906 to put on, including all catering along the way, talks and demonstrations from partners, man power to make it happen, metal power to get us around on the day and rider packs.
For finer details, read on...
$2760 goes directly to local farmers & food producers, and feeding the bellies and minds of our riders.
$210 hires a blender bike and cargo bike, as well as a GoGet van to help us move bits around the city.
$120 is divided by the 120 riders and allows us to make them a $1 riders pack, so they are equipped with a map for the day, as well as handy info on cycling in Sydney and how to eat more sustainably.
$66 gives us signs and banners to use on the day (and for other events), which are particularly useful against confused motorists who want to know why they are sharing the streets with a swarm of cyclists!
Approximately 14% of our funding goal will recoup the time and effort our dedicated team of volunteers put into making the day a reality. They’re mostly fueled by the smell of a sustainably produced meal, but this will allow us to say thanks and keep them involved in order to help movement grow.
If we raise the remainder of our funding goal - we will commit to holding the Ride On at least twice a year, we can continue our phenomenal Reel Food Nights series, and we will be able to plan more innovative, creative and life-chainging events like Passata Day that bring people closer to food and producers, and help to transform this crazy food system.
Not ready to commit?
No worries. Sign up for updates on the ride, and you can decide a little later.
