The Idea
Throughout the ages, humans have categorised the stars in the night sky for a variety of practical reasons. One of the most common ways to remember a given thing is to create a mnemonic device, often achieved through song and story. Seafarers throughout history have used the stars and constellations to navigate their way around the world. On land, it is relatively simple to find your way around by using a combination of the visual cues available. At sea though, it is possible to go for long stretches at time without seeing any land, and mariners have found their way by determining their latitude and longitude. In this instance, humans have (and to some extent, still do, despite the onset of GPS tracking) use the stars as a navigational device. With spherical trigonometry, we can use the limited information we do have (the time of day, position of the sun or moon, the position of certain stars in the sky) to determine where we are and figure out how to get to our destination.

The Exhibition
There are 88 modern constellations that make up the area of sky visible to us. Of these, there are 58 stars in 38 constellations of particular importance to celestial navigation. Further, 20 of these 38 constellations contain stars that are significant to celestial navigation in the Southern Hemisphere. In this exhibition, I will create etchings of these 20 constellations to hang around the Dome Gallery at the Mission to Seafarers in the Docklands, Melbourne. It's a beautiful, beautiful gallery, and the perfect place to show these artworks.

The space is booked and ready to go for a three week exhibition opening on 20 April 2013, running through until 10 May 2013.

To date, 7 of the etching plates have been created, with 13 left to complete. Each artwork will include a short piece of printed text from literature related to life at sea. Each artwork will be printed as an edition of 5.

The Money
Exhibiting artwork doesn't come cheaply. $3600, the goal that I've set for this project, will cover gallery rent for the duration of the exhibition. If I don't get the $3600, I can't put on the show. Of course, there are other costs apart from the gallery rental. Any extra money raised will go towards these, and if I'm particularly, especially, wondrously lucky, I'll even be able to pay myself (!!! An artist! Getting paid!! OMG!!!1!) and keep some cash in reserve for future exhibitions.

Here's a basic budget breakdown of what's absolutely essential for the show:
Gallery Space: $3600
Framing: $2600
Art Materials: $2000
Print Studio Access Fees: $2000

What You Get
Every single person (the fact that you are a brilliant and really, really ridiculously good-looking person should go without saying) who helps fund the exhibition will be invited to the opening night celebration, where you'll get to eat excellent cheese (and other snacks) and drink delicious beverages while looking at the art that you've helped to create.

If you want to support this project but don't live in Melbourne and can't make it to the exhibition, you'll be able to follow along online and you'll still get a fantastic reward. The cheaper options include older, smaller works: if you choose the $40 or $60 options, you'll get something that I've chosen from my artwork collection especially for you. The $490 and $700 options include the work that will be exhibited: these will be delivered in May 2013. Everything else will be delivered in December this year, just in time for that thing we call Christmas. Yes, that's right, if you already own enough of my artwork, or, (shock! horror!) it isn't to your personal taste, you can buy someone you love an excellent, original, handmade gift. Everyone wins.

A Bit More About Me

Statement
Leonie Connellan is a print-based artist from Melbourne, Australia. Her current work explores the relationship between the physical sciences of the universe and how we find our place in it through storytelling — the interweaving of fact and fiction to create a comprehensive understanding of the whole. She explores the role of the night sky in storytelling, and how we use the latter to build on the knowledge of our existence, with the ultimate goal of instilling a sense of scientific understanding, wonder and curiosity about the structure of the universe and our place in it.
