Money raised from our Pozible campaign will make it possible for us to provide a much needed venue and performance platform for our smaller circus companies in Australia's biggest Arts Festival, The Adelaide Fringe.
We need $22,000 to meet the production costs of getting a venue up in Adelaide and ready for shows- this includes rigging, lights, sound, curtains, stage, chairs, adornments, wages and accom for our team making it all happen!!
This will allow us to have a circus specific venue, with shows, forums, workshops and skill sharing sessions throughout the festival.
The Birdcage will be presenting 11 Companies doing approx 115 shows over a 4 week season in 2013.
In 2010 Felicia OBrien (Flee) presented a venue in the Adelaide Fringe Festival called The Birdcage. The objective of the Birdcage was to supply a performing platform for small circus companies in a venue that fits the complex requirements of circus skills. We presented 13 different shows by 11 companies, running around 85 sessions over the 3 weeks of the festival. The project was greatly helped by the in-kind donation of the use of Circus OZ's smaller big top, and the generous volunteer work by many, many people from our circus community.
The rest of the production costs were funded by Flee's passion for circus. This time she needs a bit of help!
In 2013 we would like to return to the festival and do it again, however, the convenience of having a supporting circus company across the road is not this year's reality..... and so we are trying to raise funds for the production costs of setting up a venue in Adelaide.

"There are currently limited venue options for circus performances within Adelaide. The Birdcage provides a much-needed hub to showcase and develop local, interstate and international artists in this sector. In fact, when The Birdcage operated at Adelaide Fringe in 2010, event registrations in the Circus category more than tripled from the previous year. Adelaide Fringe fully supports The Birdcage’s plans for 2013."
Why Circus? This is what Flee had to say in a recent interview with ACAPTA...
"Circus is one of the last bastions of individuality, it is the true home of creativity- it has no rules, it knows no boundaries. Nowhere else do you find the complete acceptance of such an array of individuals, everyone is special, everyone is necessary, everyone is equally important. As an audience we leave the circus with the sense that we too can be something special, in some way.... in any way we choose..... how could we not need that in the world? It's a reminder of our humanity."
