Women Challenging the Workplace
Why?
Young women entering the workforce today expect to receive the same rights and respect as their male colleagues. However, those who have chosen a male dominated career such as building, information technology, science, engineering or a trade are often shocked to find that the workplace is a long way behind their expectations.
In 1961, my Mum was the first woman at the Bank of New South Wales (in Victoria) to be allowed back to work after being married. This was because she challenged the accepted status quo and demanded to know why married women were not seen as valued workers.
More recently, my sister left a career in politics for an apprenticeship and is now a fully qualified carpenter. She was confronted by pre-conceived stereotypes of womens' capabilities and a sense of never really being accepted, before finally finding fulfillment in running her own business.
There are many stories such as these. In Australia, while we now have our first female Prime Minister, Governor General and Attorney General, there are women still struggling for the most basic equal rights, such as the right to have a separate female toilet at work.
This film is to explore the challenges still before us and celebrate some of the achievements so far.
How?
Filming will include women attending the Women in Male Dominated Careers conference (Adelaide, November 2012) and follow up interviews with selected participants, as well as interviews with pioneering women in varying aspects of workplace equality.
The help of filmmaking professionals and media students will be enlisted along the way.
Budget...
I am seeking initial funding of $1,200 to kick-off filming and a rough edit. The project has a total budget of $10,000 for travel, equipment and post-production.
