QUEEN OF THE DESSERT
A new Australian musical about the life of cooking matriarch and national living treasure: Margaret Fulton.
When I first met the Australian cookery superstar, Margaret Fulton, it didn't occur to me that I would one day write a musical about her. As we sat in her Balmain house, Margaret told me story after story about the mini-adventures that were all part of her life. Margaret spoke clearly and proudly about a remarkable career that covered five decades.
I contacted TV colleague and composer Yuri Worontschak to help with the songs, and we started work on The Margaret Fulton musical. A few years later, I mentioned the idea to dynamic young director Bryce Ives and he was instantly enthusiastic. He kept coming up with ingenious ideas about how such a musical could be staged. Bryce assembled a network of very gifted theatre makers through his Present Tense ensemble. You can't help but be swept up in his enthusiasm.
In short, The Margaret Fulton Musical project exists because some talented young people were enthusiastic and thought they should put it on. It’s going to happen in November, and as writers (and significantly older members of the ensemble) we want to help those young people in staging the production. It's going to be a great show, folks.
THE MUSICAL
Margaret Fulton’s life is full of all the right ingredients to make a musical: romance, drama, money, sex, power and a spoonful of jam. Her passion for cooking changed not only her life, but an entire nation, awakening the palates of meat-and-three-veg eating Australians.
Present Tense bring Margaret’s unique and surprising story to the stage, at Theatre Works this November in a culinary theatrical experience starring Amy Lehpamer (Helpmann Award nominated for Rock Of Ages) and featuring seventeen songs, big dance numbers, and a pavlova.
