Our project:

Mexican women are often portrayed in films/media as passive and dependant of their Machomen. Over the years, these representations have emphasized stereotypes which fail to recognize the achievements and importance of Mexican women in everyday life. A high number of them are working, strong and active members of their families and communities.

People like Simona Garibay, for example, a Mexican indigenous craftswoman (who's knitted work is part of our rewards scheme). Simona started working as a child along her mother and grandmother, who taught her the craft of hand-knitting. She was married at the age of 14 and gave birth to five children. Her husband abandoned her after 10 years of marriage. Consequently, Simona left her hometown to find better markets for her craft and support her children. Simona, now 50, continues to be the cornerstone of her family.

As we reflected on our own experiences as migrants, we drew our inspiration from the thousands of Mexican migrants who leave their homes every year to other towns or countries to find a better way of living and provide the basic needs to their beloved.

Mex-tli aims to challenge the female stereotypes by portraying strong and dignified Mexican immigrant women in specific situations which highlight the complex process of adaptation into a new culture.

By referencing our Mexican traditions, costumes and art crafts, we aspire to represent the Mexican community of artists in the Australian cultural scene.

Your part:

We know everyone loves Mexican food, but there is so much more to offer of our culture.
We are inviting you to be part of our project!

We have been selected to present our photographic work at fortyfivedownstairs (http://www.fortyfivedownstairs.com/). Up until now, we have self-funded the production and printing of 12 photographs for the exhibition.

It has been a fantastic journey, but we need your help to raise $3000 to pay for the matting, framing and other costs derived from publicity and the Opening Event, to which you are most invited!
This amount is the minimum required to present our first International exhibition together.

If there is lots extra (fingers crossed!), the funds will help us to take this exhibition to Sydney at the end of 2013 and Mexico in 2014.

Check out the rewards:

We decided to contribute back to the many women that inspired this project; therefore, the rewards to your support are authentic Mexican crafts created by Simona Garibay (knitted work), Luisa Rodriguez (ceramics and bead-work) and Ruth Villaseñor (jewellry).

With your donation, you will help us present our first International exhibition and support these craftswomen and their families back in Mexico.
All rewards from $25 include a thank you letter and mention in our catalogue.

Get yourself a beautiful and authentic Mexican craft and help us put on a great show!

Lots of love and a BIG THANKS to YOU!

Hola Amigos,

MUCHAS GRACIAS AMIGOS QUERIDOS.

Sissy y Yun
