About the project
‘Freddie’ is a modular and fully transportable single occupancy dwelling that can be completely autonomous (operate off the grid). The dwelling is a unique design in terms of sustainability, environmental principles, size and cost.
The original catalyst for the design was an open international design competition run by a British organisation, Building Trust International. Our proposal, which was shortlisted, was designed as transitional housing for the homeless living in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia. As ‘Freddie’ is easily transportable it can adapt too many different occupants and site conditions.
‘Freddie’ has been accepted as a central exhibition piece at the Sustainability Living Festival. A life-size dwelling will be located at Federation Square in St. Pauls Forecourt for the duration of the Festival. This site is on Swanston Street, adjacent to the Melbourne Visitor Centre and the pedestrian lights from Flinders Street Station. The festival runs from February 9-24 2013 with their ‘Big Weekend’ running from February 15-17.
‘Freddie’ is more than an exhibit. The dwelling will educate visitors to the festival and the general public on sustainable building services and products. ‘Freddie’s’ green initiatives include;
- sustainable building services (solar panels, solar hot water, water tanks, grey water recycling and composting toilet)
- passive design principles (passive cooling and heating, cross ventilation, orientation, shading, insulation)
- a modular, prefabricated and fully transportable building
- designing with standing sheet sizes to minimise material wastage
- reuse and recycling of material off-cuts from other industries for interior linings
- certified, sustainable and renewable materials
- low water use fixtures
- back-up green power supply
Your contribution
We have secured the generous support of three major partners; Grampian Homes, who are constructing ‘Freddie’; Federation Square, who are sponsoring the location and Sustainability Living Foundationwho support the project as part of their festival.
Unfortunately we have a financial shortfall (security, cleaning, transport, educational signage and administration) in delivering the exhibit and we are seeking your generous support to help a socially and environmentally responsible, educational exhibition see the light of day.
