What is the Shortcuts Film Festival?
Shortcuts Film Festival is Western Sydney's largest short film festival for young people. Shortcuts gives young film-makers connected to Western Sydney opportunities to have their films screened and judged by a panel of industry professionals and be in the running to win a prize pool worth over $9K in prizes, including $1K cash for Best Film. An initiative of Powerhouse Youth Theatre, Shortcuts was created in response to a burgeoning film culture in Sydney’s Western suburbs. The festival has experienced exponential growth since its inception in 2003 and has blossomed from a small gathering of local filmmakers to a large-scale event that engages interest from across greater Western Sydney.
This year it is down on funds and needs your help to continue. This festival is a loved event and the young people of Western Sydney, and Powerhouse Youth Theatre urge you to help us keep it alive.
Recognised as Western Sydney’s premiere short film festival for young people, Shortcuts showcases the best emerging talent from the region and creates industry pathways for participants. Shortcuts is open to films under 7 minutes created by anyone under the age of 25 who lives, works or studies in Sydney’s west. The 2012 entrants’ ranged in age from 14 – 24 years old hailing from areas as wide reaching as Campbelltown, Dural, Penrith and the Fairfield LGA. Powerhouse Youth Theatre received a total of 30 short films to the official competition, whose films engaged over 211 young artists, actors, production crew & 25 mentors.
Ten finalist films were selected to screen on the Festival Night – held last year on Saturday the 21st of April at the old cinema site at the Fairfield Forum. Films were screened before an industry panel of judges and prizes were awarded in 7 categories.
Shortcuts is presented in partnership with the Information and Cultural Exchange, Fairfield City Council and is part of the official activities of National Youth Week.

2013 will be Shortcuts 10th birthday festival and it will be held on Saturday the 13th of April in Fairfield, NSW, Australia. It will headline the new Fairfield Arts Festival as part of Youth Week !
How do we need your help?
The $10,000 grant we received last year for Shortcuts 2012 Film Festival isn't available anymore. This money was essential to run the festival. We therefore count on your support to make this great event happen !
If successful these funds will be used for:
- Venue hire
- Equipment hire
- Advertising and promotional material
- Flyers and design costs
- Website costs
- Production staff
- General administration
Why is this so important ?
Crowdfunding is now the only way left to make the Shortcuts 2013 come true. 2013 will be Shortcuts Film Festival's 10th anniversary, we don't want this very important youth film festival to come to an end.
Shortcuts is the biggest film festival for young people in Western Sydney providing highly successful artistic and social outcomes for our local youth communities.
Fairfield LGA and Western Sydney is home to some of the most diverse and disadvantaged communities in the country. For 9 years, Shortcuts has played an important role in fostering local youth, by giving them the possibility to express themselves, to show their talents and to share their stories.
We believe that you can make the difference. Our Hero Project in 2011 was also supported by Pozible and it turned out to be a great success !
