The Idea
I am creating a music video to accompany my new single,
"Another Apology".
The song itself is somewhat of an open letter of apology. As such, it seemed pertinent to ensure the supplementary video should capture it's underlying sentiment and mood. Apologies don't always come easily, and many of us opt to carry guilt with us in lieu of stomaching our pride and uttering those simple but, often, painful words: "I'm Sorry". That is where the idea for the project came from.
On
December 22nd, 2012 I will be inviting people in the Melbourne area to contribute a visual apology for someone or something that is personal to them. They may do this through gesture, use of props, written words or any other creative way they can think of. All ideas are welcome and have been invited for submission to
[email protected]
The individual apologies will be filmed against a backlit sound stage and compiled into a montage that will constitute the main body of the music video.
The song itself will be recorded, mixed and mastered by December 20th (just two days prior to the filming date). At this time, free downloads of the song will be made available via my official site and social networking pages.
Some examples of the apologies that have been volunteered so far include:
- a young lady holding an empty jewellery box (for a ring), and a note inside reads: "I'm sorry I said no"
- a man holds a helium balloon that floats to reveal the message: "I'm sorry I ruined your party"
- a young boy holds a pillow and across the pillow case is written: "I'm sorry I woke you up"
The video will be shot by independent film maker and actor Jackson Raine. This will be done with a single camera with all 'apologies' edited into a seamless final product. The video will be released online via YouTube on January 1st, 2013, the perfect way to start the New Year. This will coincide with the online release of the EP, Dependent State via BandCamp.
Some of Jackson's work can be found online via YouTube:
Jackson and I also previously collaborated on a live recording, many of the songs appearing on my own Youtube channel:
Futhermore, we will endeavour to gather exposure for the video, the song it accompanies, and the message it promotes, through a broad online and social media focussed campaign.
This will include, but is not limited to:
- a paid Facebook ad campaign
- posting the video as a response to other related YouTube clips (centred around the themes of apologies and forgiveness)
- encouraging other YouTube users to submit their own visual apologies using the format established in the video
- Sharing the video via music forums, video forums, and linking it to all available online resources (including my own offical site, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and BandCamp
In addition, I/we will:
- export the finished video to relevant formats (including BETAMAX) to submit to Television bodies, including Australia's RAGE programme (ABC) and 1700 (Channel 31). We will also submit the video to international networks including Singapore's Mediacorp and MTV Asia.
- tour extensively throughout Australia, Asia and potentially the United States and Europe to promote the single, the record, and the video for which funding is sought
What we need funding for
Note that I will be privately funding the recording and audio mastering of the single. Jackson Raine also excludes his own professional costs in the establishment of the following budget. The budget has been generated based on reasonable estimates and cost expectations.
We are gathering funding to assist with the following expenses (all in AUD).
Production:
- Equipment/camera/tripod/lighting hire ($2500.00)
- Prop purchase for "apology makers" (eg. balloons, cardboard, confetti, paint, markers, glue, etc.) ($200.00)
- Editing/post production/mastering (based on estimate of 12 hours x $70.00 per hour = $840.00)
Distribution
- Format export/conversion/copies (estimate of 10 initial copies at $80.00 per copy = $800.00)
- Social media campaigns targeting regions where I will tour in promotion of the song and cilp (Facebook/Twitter budget: $300.00)
- Printing/development of supplementary promotional materials including press release design, poster printing (for distribution in cities where touring will occur), postage costs and sundries ($360.00)
TOTAL PLEDGES NEEDED = AU$5000.00
