What is ‘The Games Maestro’?

Not so long ago, after a particularly humourous session of D&D, our esteemed composer sat down to write a song. Originally titled “The %201 GM Ballad of Tunefulness”, and now under the moniker “The GM’s Lament”, it was a comedic look into the mind of a GM. And then… Things happened. A script began to form, a creative party was assembled and “The Games Maestro” came into being. The Lament became the pilot episode, and the first season is extending from there.

The Games Maestro is an 12 x 7 minute episode web series, both dramatic and comedic, intimate and epic, and also musical. Our leading man, the GM, doesn’t lead so well outside of the game. After suffering a vicious blow to the heart with the %202 Sword of Surprise Break-up, he tries to escape his pain by putting together his old D&D group. Things are never as simple as they sound though. As every GM knows, no matter the plot you plan out, the players will find ever-increasing ways to subvert the story. And when your imagination is a magical maze of musical mysteries, who knows what will result…

The Pilot is a toe-dip into the water, a test of a concept and idea. We think the idea has legs and are excited to be embarking on its first season.

What are we planning?

We’ve written and are in the process of rehearsing the first season. We have some XP, but are a little low on GP. To clarify, we need additional funds to enable us to record the 13 songs from the season to the highest quality we can, acquire the lighting stock we need to make it look great and to create costumes that would make any cosplayer this side of the Astral Plane jealous.

Our initial goal of $8,000 will enable us to achieve this, however should we exceed our initial target, we will be aiming to do the following: 

- Expand the recordings to include live recorded wind and string sections, to capture that D&D epicness.

- Increase our green screen capabilities to create some stunning effects.

- Make the costuming of the player-characters much more detailed.

With your support, there is no end to how cool we can make this. And at the end of the day we want to give you the most entertaining product possible!

Our real goal, subversive though it be, is to remind everyone how cool D&D is. It is a tabletop game that creates epic worlds, massive battles, moral dilemmas, action sequences, you name it, it's there. And we’re going to make you laugh, maybe cry a little, and sing some great music you haven’t heard yet. All while dual-wielding curved scimitars. And avoiding bards.

Why are we doing this?

These are the things we do. We are emerging(ish) artists trying to make our art however we can. The pilot, our concept video as it were, was made on a shoe string and a prayer, and we think the idea of this project  has the potential to be something genuinely worthwhile. We would like to build a community of passionate people, emerging artists who can work together on art that inspires, and share that with as wide a community as possible.

This project is the first major project of CMW Music, the brainchild of our Writer/Composer Craig M. Wood and Production Manager/Co-Director Michelle Wood. This company is built to create artistic projects that offer opportunities for people to explore their creative language. This is done through tuition, live theatre, music... and even musical web series.

The Crowd-Funding

Naturally, we’re crowd-funding this project because we need the money to do this justice. But more importantly, the best part of D&D is the community that goes with it, and we would like as large a community as possible to become part of this plot, a part of this story. We are ridiculously excited about this project, and we want to share the joy!

What you get?

The usual mix of DVD’s, thank you's, Electronic Downloads are available on the lower level rewards, and anyone who donates $10 or more will have access to our special features Vimeo channel, which will have lots of extra content, bloopers and other frippery. Our Composer may even be convinced to write you a song. Also, we have a couple of very rousing rewards. Our cinematographer, who also dabbles in LEGO stop-motion animation is building a one-of-a kind LEGO version of the set, and our Rogue is also designing a one-of-a-kind, GM inspired Nerf Gun, a modified Vigilon, for those in the know. There are sheet music rewards, if you want to take a crack at belting out the GM tunes, and you can even come round to our place and play D&D with us, as long as you can get here. We’d pick you up in a hovercraft if we had one, but since we don’t, we’ll have pizza instead.

Craig has always dreamed of being a LEGO nerd, something he has yet to achieve. A fan of fantasy and science fiction films, a lover of card games and a relatively new convert to Dungeons and Dragons, he gets excited by the creativity and ingenuity involved in geek culture. He finds inspiration in the writings of Terry Pratchett, secretly adores superhero movies and plays Action RPGs whenever he has the chance. He also writes musical theatre.

Michelle Wood

Since being invited to a friends’ older brothers’ “Outbreak of Nerdity” Michelle has been an occasional Gamer. With a little too much knowledge to be a Penny, but not quite enough to be a full on geek she enjoys having a foot in the door. A recent convert to the Discworld novels she treasures the gems of nerdism and ridiculous vocabularies that shape her world.
Michelle also has studied theatre production. She enjoys production management. Her special place is working in Excel.

Justin discovered a love of pyrates and LEGO simultaneously as a child, and is now a fully-fledged purist AFOL with brick management issues. An occasional tabletop gamer who loves classical novels and who in his adulthood has found that he finds the videogame industry more interesting than the games themselves. Justin is a freelance video editor by trade and has recently returned to acting on stage.
