WHAT IS 'THE IMPROVED'?
The Improved is a new play that will be part of The Blue Room Theatre's Summer Nights program in FRINGEWORLD 2013.
SO WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
'The Improved' is set in a dystopian present where assessors are employed by a faceless department to ''improve'' the citizenry. James, an ambitious rookie, is partnered with the notorious veteran assessor known only as ''The Stare''. But why is there cake? And why is their scheduled assignment C00789 late?
What follows is a psychological mind bend that dissolves the line separating the assessor and the assessed. 'The Improved' is an Orwellian story of power, ambition and revenge.
WHO'S INVOLVED
'The Improved' marks the debut production by ''The Skeletal System'', a company looking to stage new Australian work that demands as much from its audience as it does of its artists (and no, we're not just talking about the cash).
What we're talking about is telling stories that aren't always simple and aren't always nice but always explore what it means to be a human being.
To quote the late David Foster Wallace, 'Fiction should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed'. We think this is an idea worth aspiring to.
We've assembled a gun team for 'The Improved'. So let's meet the artists.

The team includes five WAAPA grads, three company directors, one PHD, and a dump truck full of passion.
SO WHERE ARE WE AT?
"The Improved" is currently in rehearsals but the project has been alive and kicking for a number of months. We've been busy organising publicity and marketing and script rewrites and photoshoots and videos and more script rewrites and set designs and even more script rewrites and costume designs and...well, you get the idea.

SO WHAT'S THIS ABOUT MONEY...?
In case you hadn't heard money makes things happen. Like this show. But at the moment we don't have...well...any really. Don't get us wrong, the show must and will go on, but with a little bit of help we can make it go on with more of a bang. So this is where you come in (please?):
The $1500 we're targeting will go towards covering the few necessary expenses that all projects rely on. Stuff like photography, rehearsal room hire, printing posters and flyers, props (we need to make a cake every night...), costumes, set pieces, technical equipment...it all begins to add up.
Your donation, however humble, will allow this show to thrive instead of just survive.
WHY THIS? WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
Well, all bias aside, we think 'The Improved' is going to turn heads. It promises theatre that is confronting, tender, and darkly comic.
We want you (Yes Uncle Sam) to feel a part of this show's beginning. We want our patrons to feel as emotionally invested in the show's success as we do. By donating you can be proud of the fact that you're shaping how we see ourselves as a culture. We think this is important. Theatre is the act of holding up a mirror to our society and in order to grow we need to know who we are. By donating you get to hold up that mirror (in fact, let's face it, you're pretty much buying the damn thing).
We'll also give you an assortment of goodies as listed in the side bar. But we think that's just the cherry.
AND THE FUTURE?
The Skeletal System already has plans for 'The Improved' to have a life after fringe. We want it to tour and we want it to run for longer seasons.
We also have a new show coming this June, but this time it's with a fully fledged three week season. We're not allowed to say too much more just yet but keep an eye out. You'll need to. Because it's about a shark...
