What is this?

Small events -- an innovation, a discovery -- can change the course of an industry, or an entire nation. However, these rivers of change tend to flow in familiar directions. Gold and Games endeavours to compare and contrast the similarities between Australia's Forest Creek gold rush of the 1850s with the video game revolution of the 1980s, to demonstrate some of those repetitive patterns within human history that continue to guide and shape the future of our homes, our work and our play.

Through a physical exhibit (including many playable classic games on original hardware) housed in John Quarterman's former 1860s-era 'Glenmona' residence stationed atop Wesley Hill (near Castlemaine, Australia), a virtual on-line exploration, and an entertaining yet educational mobile application, Gold and Games will touch on a number of fundamental topics common to both of these historic processes: pioneering spirits, economic forces, booms and busts, opportunists, changing landscapes, legacies and evolutions. It is hoped that those who experience any or all of Gold and Games' platforms will come away with a greater sense of enlightenment regarding historical themes whilst having a bit of fun in the process!

The real-world exhibition will be open during the Castlemaine State Festival / Castlemaine Fringe Festival, 16-25th March. The virtual exhibition will be permanent, and the mobile game will be available in the Android market at the start of the Festival(s).

What do you need my money for?

Although we're sweating our own blood and tears to develop the website, mobile application and content, the physical exhibition will require the purchase of a number of materials (wood, rope, fasteners, etc.) and tools in order to construct exhibits that exemplify their topics. We also need additional electronic equipment such as Android tablets to serve as interactive components of the exhibits. We're happy to contribute our physical space, risk our own classic gaming collection, and invest the hundreds of hours of our time required to make this experience possible, but some assistance with the out-of-pocket expenses incurred through having a physical exhibition would be most useful.

What do I get?

Since the exhibit, website and mobile application are all free, rewards are primarily recognition-based, with a notable exception or two as outlined in the rewards section of this page.
