The Pyjama Monologues
"I like to get
into bed, with my dressing gown and slippers on, and turn all the lights
off and put some nice easy listening tracks on and open a packet of
chocolate biscuits. That is when I feel the safest of all. It's a funny
thing being one of the survivors of a bungled armed robbery. You’re one
of the lucky ones because it wasn’t you shot in the bloody head by ...
and that thing they did to that poor old lady was just sickening. But I
suppose I’d feel better if they were all dead. The robbers..."
The Pyjama Monologues
is a short film produced by the team of Unreasonable Films (Jason Sweeney -
Director/Composer) and Fiona Sprott (Writer). The film will be a series
of perversely funny, haunting and provocative vignettes that draw upon
Fiona’s darkly comic stories about isolated characters who confess their
strange little bedroom secrets. It will follow absurd scenes of off-kilter characters
who find themselves in public places in their pyjamas, vulnerable and
lost; characters who are trapped by their obsessions of bedroom life, bedroom fantasies...
The funding raised for this film will assist with camera/lighting/sound hire - as well as minimal props and costumes. We will work on locations, using natural light and sound wherever possible for maximum effect.
"I mean most
people like to hide their mental illness but I embraced mine. Nobody
trusts a woman in her forties wearing Tweety Bird pyjamas for four years
in a row and so nobody expects anything from me any more."
We plan to shoot the film over one week in December 2011, with a planned rough cut scheduled for February 2012. We're aiming for an 8-10 minute film.
WHO ARE UNREASONABLE FILMS AND WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?
We are a tiny intrepid team setting out to make DIY films with small budgets about BIG ideas.
Our films aim to be high quality, risk-taking and 'hand-made', often with key creatives playing multiple roles and working between self-shooting, performing, editing, composing.
We often employ a 'guerilla-style' approach to filmmaking, unafraid to point, shoot and experiment.
The sense of strangeness in an off-kilter world needs to be found
through a kind of intimate filmmaking process and through an ability to
experiment with a small ensemble of performers.
And we would like to involve public participation wherever possible - so
here is your chance to invest in unreasonable filmmaking!
We are a long-term artistic collaborators based in Adelaide, Australia.
We bring to the project over 20 years of professional work in theatre,
music, film, online art and screen culture.
Jason Sweeney has produced, written, composed for and directed a series of short
films, including the acclaimed experimental short DISAPPOINTMENT (2006).
This film won the Best Experimental Film at the South Australian Short
Screen Awards in 2007 and has screened internationally at such places as
the MIX New York City Queer Film Festival, Melbourne Underground Film
Festival, Sydney Mardi Gras Film Festival, Thessaloniki International
Film Festival (Greece), XPosed Film Festival Berlin and Mumbai Gay and
Lesbian Festival. He is directing his first experimental feature film in
2012. His interdisciplinary practice in the last 8 years has been in
the emerging, risk-taking and constantly developing fields of new media
art, sound installation, live art, interactive community projects and
screen culture.
Fiona Sprott is an established writer of twenty years, in the fields of
live performance, screen-based projects with Unreasonable Films, and
more recently has moved into professional screenwriting. She holds a
Masters Degree in Creative Arts, and is currently enrolled in a Doctor
of Philosophy with Flinders University working on an interdisciplinary
research project with both the Drama Department and School of Law. Her
artistic and academic practice is heavily invested in contemporary
forms, provocation and risk. She has been in a dynamic and productive
creative partnership with Jason Sweeney for more than twenty years,
producing contemporary work which explores the nature of audience
interaction or contribution to a live performance. Sprott and Sweeney
also cultivate a thriving interdisciplinary practice combining academic
research with creative development for both live and screen based
outcomes. Along with Jason, Fiona now lectures in contemporary
performance making and practice for tertiary institutions.
