Murdoch Childrens Research Institutes wants to build an app for its Step-a-thon program, to help encourage kids to get active and to teach them about living healthily.
We have received seed funding through Vodafone Foundation’s App Aid to build the app prototype. But now we need to raise $8,000 to bring the app to market and make it a reality.
Vodafone Foundation will match every pledge made between 9am EDST 14 November and 5pm EDST 5 December 2013 (up to $10,000). Plus, every donation counts, no matter how big or small, as Vodafone Foundation will donate an additional $10,000 to the App Aid charity team with the highest number of individual backers at 5pm EDST 5 December 2013.

About Murdoch Childrens Research Institute

Today the health of our children is challenged by issues such as obesity, cancer, allergies, diabetes and depression. With a team of 1500 researchers, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute are working towards finding preventions and treatments to these, and hundreds of other rare and common childhood illnesses, so that kids everywhere can have a healthy future. Murdoch Childrens is the largest child health research institute in Australia, and is recognised globally for its child health discoveries.

When you support us you are helping our researchers take an extra step towards discovering cures and treatments and improving the health of children around the world.

About Step-a-thon

Step-a-thon is a national campaign for primary school children to help teach them the importance of making every step count.

Murdoch Childrens wanted to get kids active and do something positive for their own health and well-being, while at the same time raising vital funds for child health research.

Every kid who signed up for Step-a-thon received a slap band pedometer, to record their steps and monitor their progress.

For a program in its first year, we had almost 20,000 kids participate, from all across Australia. And together they raised over half a million dollars - which all supports child health research.

Wave Digital

Vodafone Foundation - the opportunity to create an engaging and fun app for kids that encourages them to get active and educates them about being healthy wouldn't be possible without the support of the Vodafone Foundation, of which we are really appreciative and grateful!

How The Funds Will Be Used

Wave Digital will produce an app which will significantly increase the impact of the Step-a-thon program through higher engagement with kids who take part in the program. We want every kid to get active and to learn about living a healthy lifestyle.

We have a game! We have dinosaurs!

On each level, kids will avoid lollies and eat fruit to get points.

Kids will complete activities like going to the park with their parents to make sure they are active between levels. Kids will also get quizzed on child health questions when they are not doing activities.

Note:
Thanks to seed funding provided by Vodafone Foundation’s App Aid, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute has worked with Wave Digital agency to develop this app idea. Vodafone Foundation will match every dollar pledged (up to $10,000 per charity) on Pozible, between 9am EDST 14 November to 5pm EDST 5 December 2013. Plus, the charity app with the highest number of individual backers at 5pm EDST 5 December 2013 will receive an additional $10,000 donation from Vodafone Foundation and will be deemed the winner of App Aid 2013.

The Challenges

The main challenge will be engaging kids in the app but also ensuring they get active. We’re also keen to ensure that kids find the app fun to play, whilst also being educational so that parents will be happy for their kids to spend time on it! But we’re sure that with Wave Digital’s support that we’ll achieve these two goals.

Every donation over $2 is tax deductible. Thanks for helping to make this app possible. Every donation counts. You’re helping Step-a-thon reach more kids with your donation. You will also receive a notification email when the app is launched.
