Kings ARI’s 10-year anniversary publication
It's been 10 years now that KINGS Artist Run Initiative has found itself "doing art things".
Are you one of the 500 artists who have exhibited at Kings before?
Found yourself with a beer in hand at one of our openings?
Have you been shocked/perplexed/aroused at a Flash Night?
Do you believe in the possibilities of the uncontrollable beasts known as the Artist Run Initiatives ?
Ten years is a long time in ARI years. We have exhibited over 500 artists, presented more than 330 exhibitions and have been held together by an amazing rotation of dedicated committee members and passionate volunteers.
Right now however is not the time for rest: We want to create a publication that will reflect on the history and the significant role that KINGS and other ARI's play in Melbourne’s artistic community.
Sometimes projects like this need more than just commitment, enthusiasm and teamwork - They need a bit of coin!

ABOUT US
We have worked with over 500 artists, presented more than 330 exhibitions and events such as Flash Nights, 5 specific international projects and a series of emerging artist programs. Kings has developed into one of Melbourne’s most vital and recognisable artist-run galleries, run by dedicated volunteers.
Kings was established in 2003 by a group of artists (Marcel Cousins, Frank Guarino, Brendan Lee, Brie Trenerry and Anne Wilson) as a space to exhibit innovative and experimental artistic practice, including a purpose-build video space and affordable studios.
To celebrate our birthday we want to create a publication that will reflect on our history and the significant role that Kings has played, and continues to play in Melbourne’s artistic community. We believe that this publication will enable us to think critically about the role of the Artist Run Initiative and function as long standing ressource on the ARI sector in Australia.
!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP !!!
We are asking for donations from all our friends, supporters and lovers to make this publication possible!
We aim at producing a significant resource about a long standing Artist Run Initiative and wish to pay tribute to our artists, committee members and volunteers who have contributed to Kings during this decade.
This celebratory publication will include:
- A short history of Kings
- Interviews with founding members
- 1 overarching essay reflecting on the role of the Artist Run Initiative
- 3 essays with project highlights & oral histories at Kings from past committee members
- A series of 1 page artwork contributions by past exhibitors (image of work, exhibition documentation, or response such as creative writing or anecdote)
If you are a past exhibiting artist please send us your artwork at [email protected] !
It will be designed by Simon McVilly, artist and past committee member (who also designed our Emerging Artist Program poster and catalogue!).
This substantial publication will be launched on October 4th 2013 to coincide with a 2-part exhibition also planned to mark our anniversary.
The first part of the exhibition includes Cate Consandine, Kel Glaister, The Kingpins, Brendan Lee, and Sanja Pahoki. With the support of the Australia Council for the Arts (Artist Run Initiative Grant).
Help us to celebrate our birthday in style!
