Tanabata Wish Upon a Star

Way out West Festival for Children is in its third year and going strong. As the only contemporary art festival for children in Western Sydney we provide innovative and free theatre performances, exhibitions and art workshops that are inclusive of all the children in the community, regardless of their socio-economic background or abilities.
The theme of the festival this year is cultural storytelling, with the featured event being a giant installation entitled Tanabata: Wish Upon a Star by Melbourne based Japanese artist Chaco Kato. This ambitious installation explores a Japanese folk tale of two star crossed lovers that have been banished to either ends of the galaxy and reunite each year on the 7 July. Through workshops lead by artist Chaco Kato, the large evolving sculpture will celebrate the Japanese Star Festival by incorporating local children’s origami, kirigami and tanzaku to create a swirling constellation of wishes.
Through this initiative we are asking you to help us realise this incredible project by Chaco Kato and the children of Western Sydney.
How The Funds Will Be Used

The funds raised will be used to purchase materials and hire facilitators and artists for Tanabata: Wish Upon a Star so that Chaco Kato's innovative and ambitious vision can be realised for the Way out West Festival for Children.
