Hello viewers,
My name is Shuling. I'm a recent graduate student from the Western
Australian Academy of Performing Arts majoring in the Bachelor of Arts in
Dance.
As a professional dancer new to the workforce, I have been given an amazing
opportunity to assist Philip Channells (former Artistic Director, Restless
Dance Theatre 2009-2012) as an Associate Artist with his upcoming Hong Kong “New
Works Forum: Challenging Perspective on Physicalities and Bodies” and his on
going practice called PERFECT (im)PERFECTIONS - stories untold.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT
Dance to me has been a very big part of my life and has inspired, helped,
and motivated me in every way possible. It has opened me creatively and has
allowed me to explore, experience, and discover things about myself,
about others and the world around me.
This project is highly important to me because I believe it keeps the art in
the world alive, as well as giving people with a disability a chance to open
up, explore and present their thoughts and ideas in a creative manner and
in an inclusive environment. To be given the opportunity to collaborate
with these amazing unique artists, to exchange experiences and techniques, and
to learn from each other; the communication between us, is a
privilege.
Growing up with a brother who has learning difficulties who has been through
social exclusion, as well as being around his friends who has disabilities; I'm interested in working with artists who have disability, experience mental
health issues or has been experienced social exclusion in some way. I like to hear their opinions
and thoughts about issues and or/ideas and to work with them through movement
exploration.
In 2013, I did a secondment with Philip Channells at the Bundanon
Trust , NSW where I was a part of the first Dance Integrated Australia
project - "Beyond Technique Residency". It was there where I was
first exposed to working creatively with artists with disability. This
residency opened up my mind and the possibilities, and gave me the opportunity
to collaborate and perform with them.
I was roommates with a young women who has a physical disability. Working
and sharing a room with Georgia over the residency pushed me, and soon, I
learnt how to communicate with her through sign language. By the end of the
residency we were able to communicate with each other and I learnt so
much about this amazing woman and what she has done in the world.
This residency made me realize that these artists don't have a disability.
They're able, capable and just as creative as we are.
We are one.
WHY SUPPORT ME
Social exclusion for people with disability has been a huge ongoing
problem. Witnessing my brother who has been through this, it’s important
to me to help create an environment where social exclusion does not exist. I
want to be able to show others that with or without disability, we can work as
one - together, there is no difference between one another.
Please help support my cause by your generous contribution to raise
this awareness internationally, to help launch my career as a professional
dancer, and to give an opportunity to those with
"differing" ability. If that doesn't convince you, please do it
for those who have been discriminated, bullied, and hurt. Give them the chance to
express themselves through another form.
NEW WORKS FORUM – CHALLENGING PERSPECTIVE ON PHYSICALITIES AND BODIES
The upcoming "New Works Forum: Challenging Perspectives on
Physicalities and Bodies" will explore ways of producing inclusive
performances for artists with diverse backgrounds and physical abilities at
different venues. Speakers from overseas will share their creative processes
with reference to their respective productions Sloap and PERFECT
(im)PERFECTIONS - stories untold. We’re mainly working with mid career artists
with different embodiment/practice.
In preparation for the opening of Freespace, one of the
performing arts facilities of the West Kowloon Cultural District, we have
initiated the New Works Forum, a platform for Hong Kong artists working across
different fields who are interested in expanding their practice into new areas,
to explore innovative ways of creating and performing, thinking and discussing
topics around contemporary performances.
