ZICS 2014 AUGUST 29-31
The Zine and Independent Comic Symposium, or ZICS, is a three day event run in the last weekend of August (29th-31st). We aim to support local & interstate zine and comic creators by providing a forum to meet, talk, and celebrate the diversity within our mediums.
This is an opportunity for local artists to show their skills and wares, and the chance for the wider community to find out about independent publishing and the talents in Australia.

Opening night is going to be a blast, with guest speakers, art competitions projected live onto the big screen, an affordable bar, and great bands to kick things off right!

Damn, that sounds impressive. How do I get in on this?
If you don't know whether you want to register a table or grab a ticket just yet, there will be door sales/ table registration closer to the date. BUT, if you pledge via Pozible, you'll not only be helping us to determine what sort of budget we have to work with, you'll also be getting table registration and ticket sales at a cheaper rate!

Potentially pertinent question: Why do you do it?
In times like these, where even established creators are finding it more and more difficult to get published or source funding, it's important to help foster the unique voices that are working in comics and zines, especially when what they have to say may not be automatically popular/ populist/ easily digestible, i.e. profitable.
ZICS believes that being able to craft and publish your own work, without needing to rely on another person or company, is an incredibly important act that needs to be supported. We want to create a space where people can draw inspiration, collaborate with their peers, develop important conversations, and connect to their community at large.

How The Funds Will Be Used
You can always buy tickets or table reg closer to the night, if you don’t know what you’re doing yet. But if you support us via Pozible, you'll be directly responsible for making the event an Expo 88, and not just an Ekka. Without the Pozible, the event will taste like a XXXX when it could have been a Little Creatures. Plus, it's cheaper!


This year, we are very fortunate to have the official support of The Edge, meaning that now we no longer have to hire the venue! Not to be free-loaders, we’re hosting a six-week 'from go to whoa!' series of workshops at the Edge. Run by our crew of experienced Brisbane creators and self-publishers, you’ll learn how to craft your own Comics & Zines in time for the ZICS fair! [Sign up here! But, seeing as this is only our second year running, we need still need your help. Cost to cover include printing promotional material, T-shirts, bar staff, liquor license, booking bands and acquiring art materials for the launch night. We're hoping to distribute money leftover at the end of the weekend to ZICS panelists, speakers and workshop facilitators as a token of thanks.

The Challenges
As with everything new, the first year had some teething issues, especially when it came to the rewards for Pozible. Coming up to round two, we've learnt a great deal about what works well, and what doesn't. As a result, we've made sure that any rewards that need to be posted are prepared in advance, so they can be sent out as soon as the campaign (if successful) wraps up.
