Seven years in the making, 'Grey Matters' is a documentary film that follows four hip-hop artists and their manager as they try to break into the music industry from Melbourne, Australia. With two of the artists from New York (Chase Baker and Kid Mac), one from the Bahamas (Chico) and solo female artist (Tessa Cattanach) born and bred in Melbourne but strongly influenced by African-American hip-hop, will they be accepted by Australians as Australian artists?
The question keeps getting asked; are they Aussie hip-hop? How does race, style and accent change the public's opinion of them? Does it even matter in their quest for success?
With a goal to stay true to their styles and break into the mainstream, do they have what it takes to overcome the odds?

Filming begins in 2008, as each artist's stories are told from the ground up. We follow the subjects from the recording studio to small shows around Melbourne as they build their reputation and skill. As their prominence grows, more artists are eager to join the fold and they all quickly realize the competition is not only from within the industry, but also within their own camp.

After a major distribution deal falls through, manager (Jamaka) decides to take on the task alone. But as the group grows larger and workload increases, is it too much for him to handle?
As pressure builds, relationships and commitment are tested as everyone faces questions over their loyalty to the bonds forged versus their desire to succeed.

- CHASE BAKER (Curtis Small), a gritty street lyracist originally from Brooklyn NY, who moved to Melbourne in 2000.
- CHICO (Jason Johnson), a singer and hip-hop artist born in the Bahamas.
- TESSA CATTANACH, a rapper/singer born and bred in Melbourne, Australia.
- KID MAC (Darryl Mcdonald Jnr.) a native New Yorker who moved to Australia as a child with his pro basketball playing father.

The Team

Nick studied film at Open Channel Melbourne, Australia in the early 2000's. Ever since, he has been making independent short films of various subjects/styles and purposes, often with an emphasis on short dance films. He went on to full time study at the Victorian College of the Arts, graduating in 2008.
He was also a video editor for Melbourne based audio-visual company - Stream AV. Utilizing the Final Cut pro platform, Nick worked on various documentary projects and as an assistant editor on network television shows.
'Grey Matters' is Nick's first foray into feature length documentary films as sole creator, director and cameraman. Working with a small and unobtrusive crew let Nick get an in depth understanding of the characters and story as it evolved.

Laura Waters started Princess Pictures in 2003, driven by a vision to support unique creative ideas and people, pushing audiences to see the world in new ways.
In the past decade she has produced all of Chris Lilley’s series, We Can Be Heroes, Summer Heights High, Angry Boys, Ja’mie: Private School Girl and Jonah from Tonga, as well as overseeing the production of a range of groundbreaking comedy and documentary series. Recent productions include landmark series from satirist John Clarke about this history of Australian sport and the Australian accent called Sporting Nation and The Sounds of Aus; comedy prankster John Safran’s look at cross-cultural love, Race Relations; Peter Helliar’s romantic comedy feature, I Love You Too; Outland, a comedy series about a group of gay science fiction fans; and The Ball, a documentary profiling special needs students preparing for their debutante ball.
Waters was born in the United States, studied at Boston University and initially produced current affairs and documentary television in London and Los Angeles. In Australia she was the Melbourne bureau chief of The 7.30 Report, and produced many current affairs series. Ultimately she moved into comedy and entertainment, producing two series of Kath & Kim, and working with a range of comedy talent including Shaun Micallef, Rove McManus, Tony Martin and Wendy Harmer.

Michael Costa has been working in audio production for over 25 years. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in music technology from La Trobe University in 1989, Michael forged a freelance career working at the cutting edge of digital audio. During these freelance days, Michael plied his craft for many well known artists such as John Farnham & Bachelor Girl, as well as locally made Oscar, BAFTA and AFI nominated films, such as Strictly Ballroom & Shine.
In 2000, Michael co-founded Stream AV, a Hollywood quality DVD creation facility, coming in on the ground floor of the new digital video revolution. With Michael’s existing specialist audio background, they became expert at creating 5.1 surround sound mixes for concert videos as well as generating “upmixes” for all forms of video.
Artists worked with during this time included INXS, John Farnham, Cold Chisel, Little River Band, Kasey Chambers, Richard Clapton and many others. It really was the who’s who of the Australian music scene!
In recent times, along with ongoing audio production work, Michael has been teaching Sound Production at Melbourne Polytechnic (formerly NMIT) as well as contributing several tutorial titles for renowned audio education website groove3.com.
Also more recently, Michael has mixed the audio for several major video and film projects:
Virtuosi - a detailed look at a disparate group of contemporary dancers, all originally from New Zealand, who go on to success in other parts of the world.
Living In Two Worlds - an exploration of the “Parkies,” a largely indigenous group who congregate in the parks around inner Melbourne.
Under A Red Moon - a feature length psychological thriller.
It’s A Long Way There - a documentary exploring the achievements of the well known Australian rock band, Little River Band.

Ben Sadlier worked around a full time job to record sound, often into the early hours of the morning. Being an avid short film maker and film buff, Ben was also very handy with camera in hand and became an integral part of the recording and creative process for Grey Matters.
Anna Simm also worked tirelessly during the filming of Grey Matters. Her artistic mind established from her career in dance and choreography was also utilized for lighting and interview set-ups and her knowledge with recording live performances was heavily relied upon.
How The Funds Will Be Used

The work involved in finishing this project includes video editing, color grading/correction and sound design/mixing. In addition there are marketing costs after the completion of post production and copyright clearance for some songs in the film. So we are fighting for even more than our target of $20,000. This is a simplified estimation of the costs. Not including, copyright clearance, private screening hire and marketing etc.
