Learning to Love Gravity is a brand new piece of original circus theatre that is set to be performed as part of the Anywhere Festival in May this year. The show follows the story of two girls overcoming their fears. The Orphan is terrified of the ground and The Stranger… well, The Stranger is scared of everything.

"It's 50% play, 20% fairytale, 20% aerials and 10% 'the floor is made of lava' " - Alexander Bayliss

This work has been a process of over a year of thought and investigation into the combination of the forms of circus and theatre with compelling characters and structured narratives. And theeffort is about to pay off with this show! It is a funny and
aww-inspiring fairytale about friendship with a dash of wit, a splash of heart and a hint of aerials.

Unfortunately due to the constraints around circus rigging and available venues a LOT of our costs are going into tech and we might not be able to participate in the festival without a huge loss. So – we need your help!

Meet the Team

We have a pretty brilliant team on this project (not to brag). We all have our roots in theatre and love creating new experiences for audiences. We believe in the power of theatre and narrative to connect, inspire and entertain and would love the opportunity to share this new work with the world.

Our writer you have already met but let’s get a little bit more intimate… in 5 words or less!

Alexander Bayliss (writer) - Human work in progress
Steve Pirie (director) - Thick hair. Glasses. Stick figure.
Sara McLeod (performer) - Crunchy peanut butter, never smooth
Lara Croydon (performer) - Upside down is always better
Angela Burchett (stage manager) - Package deal: unlimited high fives

A Little More About the Show....

High up in the rafters of the house she once called home, The Orphan searches for a way to avoid her greatest fear — the ground beneath her. But her solitary life is interrupted when The Stranger comes by looking for adventure.

“I guess you could say it is a circus show but with a story that you would expect in a Disney Pixar film” – Lara Croydon

Not enough? Well here’s a little taste of our script by the splendid Brisbane playwright Alexander Bayliss

Narrator: The sound of the front door was not new to The Orphan. In fact it was old, it was from before forever ago. Back when there was ‘I’ll see you laters’ and ‘Darling, I’m homes’. Back when there was ‘days at work’ and ‘lifts to school’. But now the door that had been closed forever was open again and the house that was a home was now host to a new guest, an unknown, an unwelcomed, a stranger.
[Learning to Love Gravity, pg 3]

The Stranger: I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.
The Orphan: You were just talking to me.
The Stranger: That was different.
The Orphan: How so?
The Stranger: I thought you were dead.
The Orphan: So you can talk to ghosts but not strangers?
The Strangers: I was explicitly told strangers. Ghosts were never specified.
Narrator: Hours passed and the two remained in a horribly awkward silence. The Orphan refusing to let The Stranger leave and The Stranger refusing to ask to leave on account of stranger-danger.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Well, now that you know how awesome the show is let me tell you our problem. Theatre is expensive. And circus is even more expensive. So making a circus theatre show is quite… expensive.

There are many costs associated with creating and presenting an independent show. Venue hire, rehearsal space hire, marketing, box office fees, equipment hire, props, costume, design, rigging, photography (and the list goes on). We can cover the majority of the fees for the performance but our main issues are the expenses that come along with a show that is both circus and theatre.

That being said, your donation would go towards
- Equipment hire (lighting, sound etc)
- Rigging costs
- Marketing

We would really appreciate your support in making this show pozible (see what I did there?)

The Challenges

Our challenges are mostly financial at this stage. As mentioned previously, creating circus is quite expensive. Unfortunate there are not many venues in Brisbane capable of supporting circus and the ones that are have a fair few costs associated with them. This project is also operating a profit share basis which means that our artists will not be paid for their time and commitment in the event that the performance runs at a loss.

Our methodology for circus theatre is also mostly untested. We are confident in our performance, but we are unsure how audiences will receive this production.

We are incredibly passionate about his performance and all support is welcome and truly appreciated!
