Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions throughout the world. In China, one person in ten suffers from the disease – a statistic that bestows China with the dubious honour of having the highest rate of diabetes in the world.

Along with this, one in two people in China over the age of 60 suffer from high blood pressure, while the statistic for those below 60 years of age stands at a 27% incidence. Combining the statistics for both diabetes and hypertension, about 36% of the population suffers from both afflictions. It’s a national health emergency.





On a personal level, my mother suffers from both high blood pressure and diabetes, while I myself have high blood pressure. Thanks to years of working in the medical field, I’ve found that the traditional medical approach to dealing with the management of these chronic diseases is very limited. Even if doctors provide instructions on how to manage these health issues, there are still problems. What should I eat or not eat? What is the optimal blood sugar level before and after meals? Is my blood sugar within range? How do I manage my condition long term?

As part of the medical field and as a family member of an elderly patient who has these health conditions, I’m striving to change this. In my desire to help my mother I’m also working to help other patients, providing them with convenient expert advice. My aim is to leverage the ubiquitousness of social media and the internet, combining them with detailed medical information to create a speciality health management tool. This tool will allow anyone to conveniently check their blood sugar and blood pressure, learn more about their own health, and ultimately educate them on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.



With the medical expertise provided by our team, our customers can improve their health management strategy. We also hope it will help prevent future health issues.

In pursuit of this goal, we spent a considerable amount of time gathering experts, researchers and engineers to develop our idea. After a year of hard work and overcoming many obstacles, we are proud to announce our product: the Utang.

1. Compatibility between traditional data collection tools and new technologies
Historically, traditional medical data collection tools do not contain the capabilities to automatically track changes. As technology advanced, it is now possible to access such data via Bluetooth or mobile devices, but it can sometimes be confusing for users to understand how to use these technologies. We solved this problem by consolidating sphygmomanometer and glucometer functionalities to work via the ZigBee-enabled Utang box, which in turn works in conjunction with the Utang app. This new system is simpler, more convenient and more intuitive, making it easier for users to understand their health data and engage with health care professionals.



2. Debugging problems
In order to remove the obstacle of data transmission limitations of distance, we wanted to move away from Bluetooth. As such, the Utang is enabled with the ZigBee technology, making the Utang glucometer and blood pressure monitor devices the world's first equipped with ZigBee. We performed numerous debugging activities over many months to refine the Utang 4.0 to its simplest incarnation.



3. Selection of medical professionals
As per our commitment to providing our customers with access to excellent doctors and nutritionists, we faced challenges when it came to accessing and selecting the best in China. We conducted extensive and careful screening of numerous medical professionals to ensure they met our stringent quality standards. In addition to appointing a long-term cooperation specialist, we worked in conjunction with hospitals and the Dietitians Association. We currently have thousands of doctors and nutritionists working with Utang, located in Shanghai, Beijing, Xiamen, Chengdu, Harbin and other cities.
