Is it only a matter of time?

In the 200 years since European settlement, no fewer than 130 different animal and plant species have become extinct in Australia.

And those are just the ones we know existed in the first place. Worringly, and adding to this sad statistic, Australia currently has a growing list of almost 1,800 plants and animals listed nationally as ‘Threatened’.

This means, thousands of plants and animals are at also risk of disappearing if we don’t do something to protect them.

How to do this will be one of the hot topics at the WA Threatened Species Forum which will bring together decision makers, technical experts and grassroots community volunteers to discuss current national, state and regional priorities as well as innovative, exciting solutions to this "extinction crisis" problem.

Working together to bring change

Natural Resource Management WA (NRMWA) encompassing Western Australia’s seven regional NRM groups and the WA Department of Parks and Wildlife are excited to bring this inaugural event to the gorgeous coastal town of Geraldton in Western Australia, on 30-31 October 2015.

Geraldton is the regional hub of Australia’s Coral Coast which is famous for its amazing beaches, bays, headlands and Islands. The region also offers breathtaking bushland, fascinating cultural heritage and a thriving multicultural and Aboriginal community. But, we also have rubbish, and lots of it ends up in our oceans and along our beaches. We know, because we pick it up. You may have heard about our regular community beach clean-ups.

So for our conference, we've decided that we won't be adding any more waste to the environment.....We're going waste free!

Going plastic free for the forum

We want conference delegates to enjoy Geraldton and talk solutions not create problems.

To do this, we need your help!

We're saying no to:
Paper programs
Throw-away water bottles and cups
Plastic plates, bowls and cutlery
We're even going to compost our food scraps

But, like so many good deeds, it comes with a catch. It costs more and hence this appeal. This is where a small donation from you can help to bring this "Waste free" goal, to life.

What can you do to help?

Did you know that plastics can take up to 450 years to break down in the environment! Most  ‘waste free’ initiatives cost nothing, and are simple things you can do at home to reduce waste like buying products with less packaging. However, one of our our major waste reduction strategies for the forum is to not offer plastic disposable water bottles. Instead, we would like to purchase stainless steel reusable bottles, for all delegates to not only use during the conference, but for years into the future too.

By avoiding throw-away plastic water bottles and cups, which invariably end up in landfill, or worse, on our beaches and in our bush, we are ensuring the Threatened Species Forum, and everyone who attends, are not adding to the massive and growing issues of, plastic waste.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Money raised will be used to purchase approximately 300 metal water bottles ($6.95 each ex gst) for delegates attending the WA Threatened Species Forum. Any surplus funds will be used to support other waste free initiatives for the forum including an e-program App to reduce paper waste from printing the forum program. Money raised will also cover Pozible fees.

The Challenges

There are inherent challenges associated with any event, usually related to attendance, getting people to come along. We have set the registration cost for this amazing event very low ($55) to ensure as many grass roots community members can attend. Unfortunately this means the event will run at a loss unless we get additional financial support - this is why we need your support.
