We are Shazeera Zawawi and Ben Buckland. Ben is from Tasmania, Australia and Shazeera is from Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia.

This project is a children's book, comprising 26 poems and 26 drawings. It is for big kids and little kids and for the adults who read to them.

Ben - the idea to write a children's book came from the fact that I live in Switzerland, while my niece, Sophie, and two nephews, Liam and Quinn, are all in Australia. I don't get to see them very often. I wanted to do something for them, to show them that they have an uncle who loves them, even though I am very far away.

Shazeera and I met because we work together at the Association for the Prevention of Torture. Whenever she comes into my office (mostly to see if I have any chocolate), we sometimes end up talking about what she is drawing and what I'm writing. I love her pictures and it such a privilege to be around someone so talented.

When I told her about my idea for a book, she was super enthusiastic and the idea got bigger from there.

She is much faster at drawing than I am at writing. If she'd been in charge, we would have finished by last Christmas. Sorry Shazeera!

Shazeera - I  love drawing, doodling or just experimenting with images and colours on my "digital canvas".  As I am a busy single mother, always on-the-go, I produce all my artwork on my Samsung Note 3. When Ben told me about his idea for the book, I was super enthusiastic! To me, this is just a lovely opportunity to add some visuals to his beautiful poems. I have always wanted to share my artwork with others and this collaboration gives me that chance. It is  even more meaningful as I am doing  it with a dear friend!

We have all the drawings and all the words. Now we need your help to put it on paper!

We did it ... but we can do more!

Launching this project was terrifying. But we were overwhelmed by the incredible support that helped us reach our initial goal in the first days after launching. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make that happen!

What now? Well, there is still a month to go before our deadline and I think, with your help, we can double our initial target. I hope so.

And so does this beagle ...

How The Funds Will Be Used

We have done the hard work: writing the words and drawing the pictures.

Now we need money for three things (plus chocolate):

1. We met because we both work at the Association for the Prevention of Torture. APT is an independent NGO based in Geneva. It works for a world free from torture, where the rights and dignity of all persons deprived of liberty are respected. This project wouldn't have been possible without them. That's why we will make a donation to the organisation from every single reward. Your money will go to preventing torture and inhumane and degrading treatment as part of APT's projects around the world. You can find out more by visiting their website: www.apt.ch or by following them on www.twitter.com/apt_geneva or www.facebook.com/apt.geneva

2. Design. Neither of us is a graphic designer, so we are working with a great designer in New Zealand to put everything together in a way that looks pretty. Graphic design costs money though, even when you're poor. So we need a little less than 400 CHF to pay her.

3. Printing. We'd like to make something with hard covers. I used to chew the corners of my books when I was a child and it would be good if this book could stand up to some kind of beating. We're working with some great french printers, based in Annecy and they can print copies for around 15 CHF each.

4. If there is anything left over, we will be spending it on chocolate. Obviously.

The Challenges

I think the biggest challenge was getting it on paper. Now that is done, I hope we have done the hard part.

If lots of people want copies, then posting all of them quickly will be hard but we have carefully developed a foolproof plan for that:

1. Bake brioche
2. Use it to bribe our friends to help

Help us, help APT

You don't want a copy of the book but you like the project and you like APT. We like you back :) And we will show it by thanking you by name in the acknowledgements of the book. We will also donate 2 CHF to APT.
