So what's this project about?

In Pacific communities, discrimination against children and the cultural stigma regarding the role of children means they are often marginalized. In some regions in the Pacific, children are exposed to conflict, violence, neglect and abuse. This results in the children having limited opportunities to meaningfully participate in their communities – limited opportunities to develop and grow as engaged citizens.

Through Live & Learn’s Peace Education Program, children develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence to speak out and participate in their communities to create peaceful societies.

We are working with the Ministry of Education, teachers, children, youth and the media in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea to develop a peace education toolkit called 'Be Your Future!'.

The ‘Be your future!’ toolkit includes:

1. Peace Education in the Pacific: A Teacher’s Guide

2. Child rights cards

3. Rights of the child poster

4. Children’s storybook

5. A Guide to Connect with Others and Create Change (Peer educator's guide)

6. Media guide

Drafts of the toolkit are shown below.

Progress so far…

Drafts of the ‘Be your future!’ toolkit have been written and pre-tested in each country. We plan to reach 1800 schools and 2000 teachers across the Pacific!

Jill, Live & Learn Vanuatu, facilitating a shared learning workshop with students and teachers in Port Vila, Vanuatu, on peace education at the start of the project. The information from this workshop fed into the design of the resources.

But! There is always a but!

Our research and pre-testing in Vanuatu has identified that if we really want to reach everyone and be inclusive we need to translate the school materials into French. Unfortunately, we are facing a shortage in project funds and therefore seeking to raise $5000 AUD to fund the French translations! We believe all people should have access to peace education, no matter what their mother tongue is.

That is where our relationship with you comes in!

Voilà!

If you believe in education and a peaceful society then jump on board and be part of the team to make it happen!

The final toolkit will be made publicly available - in all languages - on our website and you will be free to view the resources and download them for use.

Who are we?

Live & Learn is a network of locally registered not-for-profit organisations. We have offices throughout Asia and the Pacific, including Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Each country office is managed and run by local staff, often from the communities who we work with. Local knowledge and relationships are a crucial part of how we work. Live & Learn Vanuatu has been operating for over 12 years. For more information please see: www.livelearn.org
