I am planning an exhibition entitled 'Masked or Unmasked?' with accompanying book which centres around empowering women and shedding light on domestic violence.

Intimate partner violence is the biggest cause of injury or death for women between 18 and 45. One in three Australian women will experience physical or sexual violence in her lifetime.

20 different women from Adelaide have been chosen to be a part of my next series 'Masked or Unmasked?' - the only common factor between all 20 is that they are women and are wearing a mask of some description. The mask signifies the front that women put on, on a daily basis, to hide - mask - what is really going on underneath. They will also be topless, thus indicating their femininity and vulnerabilities.

Are they masked, or are they unmasked?

The photo shoots have been booked throughout May, first one booked May the 13. 2013 and the last one being on June 2nd, 2013. It is a follow on series to 'You Can Leave Your Hat On...' which was a series of 13, completed July 2012.

Facebook friendly censored version of my series ' You Can Leave Your Hat On...'

'You Can Leave Your Hat on...' explored the fact that a woman can dress however she chooses and that regardless of what a woman wears - or doesn't wear she is not 'asking for it', rape is never the victims fault.

The feedback I got from 'You Can Leave Your Hat on...' has been amazing. From the women who where photographed, to women and men viewing the images.

The pledge money will go towards getting the 'Masked or Unmasked?' series ready for exhibition, hiring the exhibition space and producing the accompanying book. If the money pledged goes over target, I will look at exhibiting 'Masked or Unmasked?' and 'You Can Leave Your Hat On...' simultaneously.

The 'Masked or Unmasked?' book will be a hard cover 8" x 8" edition, full colour. It will contain all 20 photographs from the series. The book will be for sale at the exhibition and will be able to be ordered online.

I will be updating this page with behind the scenes shots and other news as I do the shoots, the first one is Monday the 13th of May and I will be photographing the first 3 ladies of the series. Also follow me on instagram: juliathomasphotography for behind the scenes shots starting May 13, 2013.
