There's a new girl in town... and she makes rainbows!

A team in Sydney’s Inner West are producing a series of books to help children connect with the beauty in their urban environments, using photography with drawing, and featuring street art and streetscapes. The stories are designed for young children, with simple, meaningful narratives, but the high visual quality of the artwork, the use of photography and inclusion of street art can appeal to their parents, too.

The Girl Who Made Rainbows is the second book in this series. It is a story of a girl who embodies all the values we want to see in our children, especially our daughters – interest, compassion, creativity and self-reliance. The Girl inhabits a world that is drying up, meaning the rainbows she so dearly loves are disappearing. So she works out ways to make her own – and shares them with the people in her town.

The Girl Who Made Rainbows is aimed at children aged 5-12. It is 40-pages full colour with a hard cover. The book features a story by Peter Warrington, drawings of the Girl by Robyn Chiles, with photographs of inner Sydney by Rachel Williams, who also designed the book. (Rachel and Peter released the popular The Stripey Street Cat book in 2011.)

The layers in the book reflect the layers of urban life.

Robyn's illustrations of the Girl could stand alone, but when combined with Rachel’s photographs, they create the effect of a paste-up come alive off the page.

We were able to self-publish The Stripey Street Cat thanks to a grant from our local council.

This time, we need your help to bring this book to life.

The book is at the proofing stage and we need help with the cost of printing.

This is Robyn's first book, but she is an experienced project manager in the field of arts education. Peter and Rachel released The Stripey Street Cat on a non-profit basis in 2011, this first street art photography book for children selling over 1500 copies. Peter and Rachel part-funded the book and undertook all tasks - concept, design, photography, print production, sales and distribution, publicity and grant administration - on a pro-bono basis.

All three of us are self-employed. Rachel runs a successful freelance design business in Sydney and is an experienced designer and project manager, and wishes to take her photography to another level. Peter is working as a contract urban planner, and has many art projects in the early stages of development. Robyn is an arts educator for children, and also assists numerous NGOs.

We like to self-publish our books. By doing all of the production, printing and distribution ourselves, we keep costs as low as possible. We are seeking funds to help us with production, printing, distribution and publicity, material used as Rewards, and a modest launch event in Sydney. We do all these tasks ourselves, to keep control of the project and to keep costs down for you!

Our rewards are designed to celebrate rainbows, art and fun.

If you can, please help us bring The Girl Who Made Rainbows into the world!

Thanks, Peter, Rachel and Robyn.
