Help make The Arts Factory a reality!

The Arts Factory is a project to construct a multidisciplinary creative hub adjacent to the Tasmanian Centre for the Arts. The facility will be a contemporary establishment constructed from fabricated and appropriated shipping containers. The Arts Factory will operate as a creative hub hosting events and workshops, a cafe and an ‘art store’ for emerging artists to sell work.

We’re a group of twenty five fine art students who call the Tasmanian Centre of the Arts, at Hunter Street, Hobart, home. Once a factory for jam, it’s now a factory for art. Within its heritage walls, a shiny fresh bunch of artists and designers are innovating and creating. We are dedicated to supporting and encouraging them.

The Arts Factory is committed to identifying and fostering opportunities for creative practice students to gain experience promoting work in the public sphere. A vision to contribute and foster to an active Hobart waterfront, promoting Tasmania and the University of Tasmania as a place and education facility of creative innovation within Australia.

The last 5 years have seen a dynamism and energy gathering in Hobart, and something uniquely and wonderfully Tasmanian is growing on this energy. MONA has refocused the spotlight on Hobart’s niche art scene. It’s time that the Centre for the Arts added its own young and distinctive voice to the growing cacophony.

Answering the call, our not for profit, student driven initiative will provide this critical place. The Arts Factory proposes a space for art students and the broader community to come together over art, food and drink. Especially, it will provide the much needed space and audience for emerging artists to gain professional experience.

The Arts Factory will:

• Provide an avenue for young and emerging artists to sell their work to a national and international audience.
• Invigorate the Hobart waterfront as a vibrant arts and culture hub.
• Support artistic endeavour and events based around the Hobart waterfront.
• Establish a greater presence of the Tasmanian Centre for the Arts as an artistic
institution at the Hobart waterfront.
• Strengthen the capacity of the Tasmanian Centre for the Arts.

How will The Arts Factory look?

The Arts Factory vision is to fabricate and appropriate three shipping containers to create a contemporary, flexible and site relevant facility located at the Macquarie Wharf precinct. The facility will operate as an art store, cafe and event space, and will be complemented with a decking area and both indoor and outdoor seating.

Our Design Lead has initiated conversations with the School of Architecture to develop a composition that:

• Reflects the Hobart waterfront, past and present.
• Symbolises Hobart’s vibrant and growing arts community.
• Embraces contemporary design.
• Invigorates the public realm at the Hobart waterfront.
• Draws inspiration from similar projects around the world to adopt ‘best practices’.

The containers will be fabricated with reclaimed timber with the help of the Tasmanian Centre for the Art's furniture department.

Where your contributions will go:

Your contributions will go towards the build and construction of The Arts Factory. $8,000 will get us 1 x 12 metre shipping container and 2 x 6 metre shipping containers. Once we reach this target, all further contributions will go towards the fabrication of these shipping containers, including cladding, glazing, insulation, flooring, lighting, reclaimed timber, decking, power etc. The estimated total cost for the preliminary build and construction phase is $22,500.

The Arts Factory needs your help to make this project a reality!

We need your help so we can open the walls between the Tasmanian Centre for the Arts and Hobart, creating a place for people to come together over art. We really believe in Tasmania's emerging art community. The Arts Factory will be a place where they can actively participate with and contribute to their community, sharing and promoting their skills and talents, and invigorating the Hobart waterfront as a vibrant culture hub.

Thank-you for your support!
