SLOPES is a non-profit, curator-run contemporary art space in Melbourne, Australia. SLOPES presents the work of Australian artists and curators alongside the work of international artists. In this way, SLOPES is international in its scope, staging cross-cultural conversations through contemporary art.

SLOPES will be curated and directed by artist, curator and writer Brooke Babington, aided by the support of board members Melissa Loughnan (Utopian Slumps) and Helen Hughes (Discipline). The program will consist of curated group exhibitions, complemented by experimental music and dance events, film screenings, lectures, round table discussions and publication launches. Exhibition participation will be free for the artists and curators involved and the gallery will not take any commissions from sales.
The gallery will operate for a twelve month period pending its redevelopment. This short time span will ensure that our programming and operations will be of the highest possible calibre, while encouraging experimentation and artistic development.
We have managed to secure the SLOPES space rent free, kindly enabled by Neometro, who have also covered our fit out costs, however we still need funds to operate.
We are hoping that a little bit of grant support will come through in 2014, but in order for the gallery to open to the public on its scheduled date of Thursday 28 November 2013 we need your help!
Here's some information on our first show:
Slopes' inaugural exhibition, 'The Knock-off Show' investigates the various ways in which artists knock-off, rip-off, draw from or are otherwise inspired by the work of other artists – offering a counterpoint to ideas of innovation within the arts. The artists have been given an open invitation to rip-off another artist or style; to reinvent, imitate, appropriate, homage or simply copy other people’s work.
Curated by Brooke Babington and Liang Luscombe, the exhibition features artists Mitch Cairns, Jon Campbell, Lou Hubbard, Diena Georgetti, Kez Hughes, John Meade, Geoff Newton, Ella Sutherland, Gabriele de Santis and Masato Takasaka. 'The Knock-off Show' will run from Friday 29 November to Saturday 21 December 2013.
