Orangutan Revolution
It’s now estimated that only 6000 Sumatran Orangutans are surviving in their shrinking rainforest habitat. The number one threat to the Sumatran Orangutan is illegal deforestation driven by palm oil expansion. Without urgent action this species could be the first great ape to become extinct in the wild.
My name is Paul Daley and I'm embarking on a 12 month assignment with the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC) on their pioneering Forest Restoration program in North Sumatra.
The Orangutan Information Centre (OIC) is a grass roots NGO run by local Indonesian conservationists in Northern Sumatra to help save the Sumatran Orangutan and their forest habitat inside Gunung Leuser National Park.
I'll be providing updates live from the frontline of Orangutan conservation on the protection and restoration of vital rainforest habitat as well as advising what you can do to ensure our Orangutan friends continue to live wild and free forever. (Follow 'Orangutan Revolution' on facebook).
Right NOW we urgently need your help to give this vitally important project an added boost...
I need trees! The planet needs trees, Orangutans need trees, and I need at least $1,000 to plant a whole heap of tree seedlings in the Gunung Leuser National Park.

The OIC (Orangutan Information Centre) programs are effectively pushing back the illegal encroachment along the borders of the Gunung Leuser National Park and thereby protecting the largest viable stronghold for the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan.
I'll be working with the forest restoration unit, living in a small cabin beside a plant nursery in an area where oil palm plantation have illegally encroached inside the national park boundaries. The restoration team now lives on site 24/7, acting also as a forest patrol unit, which is effectively put a stop to the illegal expansion!! This is how we are stopping deforestation. We then work to restore the degraded land by planting a diverse range of indigenous trees (lots of trees) which are fast growing and once again becoming a lush Orangutan forest as well as improving eco-system function and flood mitigation for local communities.
Did I mention that Sumatran Tigers, Elephants and Rhinos all live here too!! It’s the only place on the planet where that occurs. Come on, let’s save this unique rainforest for future generations!
