Two by Two is a new play by Dan Giovannoni, and will be presented by Little Ones Theatre at fortyfivedownstairs in February 2012
The rain’s getting louder, the water’s getting higher, and from
their window Jack and Carl can see the boat. Then the dams burst, all hell
breaks loose, and when it looks like they’re out of luck, Duckie rocks up. She’s drenched, half-dead, and has something they all need - a ticket. A baby.
But who’s going to put two gay men and a baby on the Ark?
Taking as its inspiration the Noah myth and setting it in an Australia of the near future, Two by Two deftly and beautifully weaves the political and the personal, the domestic and the apocalyptic. In the wake of mass and ongoing flooding, a gay couple and a sick woman are denied passage on the Ark. The play charts their final hours, as they fight for hope in a world where they’ve been told not to.
Winner of the Malcolm Robertson Prize in 2011, this gutsy new play is for anyone with a brain, a heart, and an umbrella.
Who are the Little Ones?
Stephen and Dan co-founded Little Ones Theatre in 2006. The company is dedicated to supporting new writing and writers with bold and gutsy productions.
We make work that serves up the strange inner-workings of our hearts in a way that is tender, respectful, celebratory and revelatory. Our work allows you to love ferociously, abandon yourself, let your heart explode.
“Two by Two really fits with the company ethos,” says Stephen. "Dan’s writing has running alongside its politics a warm and deep compassion for humanity and love. It will resonate with audiences because they'll recognise it - their city, their friends.”
What do we want, and why?
Our goal is to raise $3500. This will help us to do three essential things.
Firstly, it will go toward building the world of Two by Two– the set, the lights, the sound. We want to create a beautiful, evocative design that serves the text and brings out its magic. A strong visual aesthetic is important to this project.
Secondly, it will help us get the publicity train rolling, and pay marketing and promotional costs.
Lastly, we’ll be able to afford a rehearsal space!
What can you do?
You can help us out in a few ways.
Firstly, you could donate to this fundraising campaign. Monetary support is the most immediate and effective way of supporting us.
If you really like great theatre – just come see the
show. And bring a friend. We promise you won’t regret it.
