All This Intimacy is a comedy about getting a little too lucky.

Ty, a 30-year-old poetry tutor, has a big week. First, he gets dumped by his girlfriend and then somehow manages to get three women pregnant—his ex, his 40-something married neighbour, and his 18-year-old student.

All This Intimacy is presented by Monday Night Theatre, a collective of Melbourne theatre professionals, not a demographic generally known for its disposable income.

So we’re here at Pozible looking for some cold, hard cash.

Our official target here is $1,500 but our total costs will be around $20,000. And that’s before we pay anyone who's working on it.

To quote Director Andrew Prowse:

You work in television and you get paid for it. You don’t get paid a fortune, but you get paid. The big surprise about theatre is just how little the people on stage get paid. They do if for love. They’re enormously committed. But you realise that they’re pretty well doing it only for love.

You watch a stage show that’s not subsidised, independent. And you look at these people on stage and you think “They’re stars. They must do pretty well.” there’s a massive amount of unpaid work that goes into a show like this. Any kind of show. It’s astounding. And the level of commitment that the actors and the people who are producing, doing lighting, everything by-and-large is done for free. If you’re lucky you might be able to cover your losses. And there’s great shortage of commitment from government for this sort of thing. So anything that you can do to make it easier is great.

About the production

All This Intimacy is a darkly comedic exploration of the deep questions about love, responsibility and morality—with absolutely no useful answers.

Written by Rajiv Joseph, it stars Scott Major (Neighbours, Heartbreak High, Always Greener, He Died With a Falafel in His Hand) as Ty; Georgia Bolton (Underbelly, Tangle, City Homicide), Joanne Redfearn (Strange Currencies, ‘Til Divorce, Bound by Blue) and Debbie Zukerman (Conspiracy 365, Bound By Blue, Rush) as the fertile women; Nathan Strauss (RACV’s “Call Jason” TVC series) as Ty’s best friend Seth; and Celeste Markwell (The WC, Bound By Blue) as Seth’s high-maintenance fiancée (and the sister of Ty’s ex).

Lighting and sound design is by Jarrod Factor and set design is by Gus Leunig.

To prepare you for the mess to come, Bruce Hughes (Winners and Losers, Rush, Secret Life of Us) will kick off the show by giving you a good talking to with A Sermon, a monologue by David Mamet.

All This Intimacy opens on Friday 24 February 2012 at Chapel Off Chapel’s Loft Theatre.
