In the pursuit of repetition (fame and squalor)
Lighter than heavy and darker than light, In the pursuit of repetition (fame and squalor) is an underground dance, visual and performance work.
Adelaide based Artists Kel Mocilnik and Alison Currie are heading to Melbourne to camp out underneath Federation Square for the nine days of the 2012 Next Wave Festival. Our accommodation is covered, but we still need to fuel a van with all our equipment to get to from Adelaide to Melbourne and, employ some extra support staff on location in Melbourne. Please help us to realize this exciting and challenging new work!
In the pursuit of repetition (fame and squalor) explores themes of vagrancy, poverty, time, equality, cycles, sexism, and nationalism. The work uses repetition to create suspension and tension. In this repetition, the short and long of it are all seemingly the same and variation is magnified. Audiences view the performers through several different filters of light, proximity and the effect of their own comfort physically and psychologically.
In the pursuit of repetition (fame and
squalor) will be the first residency of its kind in Slot
9 the underground ‘trench space’ underneath Federation Square. Slot 9 sits
alongside Melbourne’s most iconic train station, Flinders St. The sounds of the
trains heard through the walls will be used to highlight, cue and direct
sections of performance.
Through the support of the Next Wave Kickstart Program, we have so far, developed the work through a series of intensives at Headquarters Studio, Richmond SA and in the Adelaide Festival Centre rehearsal room. In addition to this, we will live onsite for a week in April to further develop our ideas, working with the specificities of the space as inspiration and a practical means of creation.
In the pursuit of repetition (fame and squalor)is physically and psychologically our most challenging project to date. We hope you will be as enthused about this project as we are, and we thank you in advance for your support!
