Prepare yourself; you’ve got some decisions to make…
The Stream / The Boat / The Shore / The Bridge places the audience at the centre of the action, asking a raft of hard questions while journeying overland and making a voyage in a rowboat.
Inspired by “what if?” scenarios and lateral thinking puzzles, the event brings participants together to make their own journey around – and over – the Yarra River. Guided by activities and events at each site, participants contribute their thoughts, choices and actions to decide how best to cross the river and reach the city. Along the way participants will see the site through new eyes from unexpected vantage points, helping to create an imaginative overlay upon a city space most often frequented by tourists and office workers.
“Rivers are interesting places of social connection and physical division. In Melbourne, the Yarra connects the city East to West, but also divides us North from South. Using the places surrounding the Southgate Pedestrian Bridge we open up a space for play as we close down the space between individuals” says director, Dan Koop.
theSBSB has been created by Dan Koop in collaboration with performance artists Andrew Bailey and Lauren Clelland, and visual artists Caroline Gasteen, Georgina Humphries and Max Milne. The project has been supported during development through residencies fishing for tadpoles on Arthur Boyd’s old property at Bundanon; marooned on Sydney Harbour’s Cockatoo Island with Underbelly Arts; and shipwrecked in a small pond for the Crack Theatre Festival at This Is Not Art.

Finally, in May we have the premiere season. Again, this is currently un-funded and by this stage we will have each put hundreds of un-billed hours into the project. We'll need a bit of cash to get our hands on things we can't make, borrow or scavenge from a skip.
Here's an indication of what we need the cash for...
- Travel from Melbourne to Bundanon, NSW
- Food to sustain us during creative development
- Water safety gear like life jackets, marine lights and a horn
- Fabric & materials to construct props and complete the site design
- Permits and licences to legally use the sites and allow people to participate in the activities
- A boat to row our punters across the Yarra
The initial $2,500 we are looking to raise won't actually cover all our costs, but it will be a significant contribution to the realisation of all our work. Sure, we are keen to see our project come to fruition because we've put plenty of our time, effort and personal resources, but mostly we want to share the experience with audiences - your support transforms private exploration into public participation.
