Alice in The Madhouse- Youth Circus Performance
‘Alice in the Madhouse’ is a dark twist on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Alice finds herself lost in a strange and unrecognisable world until she starts to see the similarities between the madhouse patients and the members of her own typical yet dysfunctional family.
The much loved characters from Wonderland are reinvented and far from helpful. Most are abrasive and intimidating, some even jealous of Alice’s freedom. Far from the Disney classics the emotions and evils in this piece are raw and confronting. Don’t be too alarmed though, there is some comic relief, after all some people don’t suffer from insanity; they enjoy every minute of it.
Drawing inspiration from ‘The art of Alice Madness’ the game by American McGee and Tim Burton’s movies this is portrayed by 8 Melbourne based Circus performers through acts such as trapeze, table sliding, handstands and more. Our backgrounds include street performing, The Flying Fruitfly Circus, Gymnastics, NICA and most of the cast is also not originally from Melbourne with some as far as Western Australia hoping to make their start this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival.
