The Freeplay Independent Games Festival is a unique mix of games, play, culture, art, education, and the digital and the physical. Through its mix of public, playful, and conference programming, it supports game makers, sparks conversations with audiences, and showcase the best of local independent and artistic game creation.
Taking place on September 19-23, 2012 at the State Library of Victoria, ACMI, and beyond, the festival will explore games creation and play through its theme of ‘Chaos and Grace’. In 2012, the festival sees the return of its successful programming, as well as the addition of new sessions & events.
We believe that Freeplay is an important event that not only shows the best of local and independent game development to the wider world of arts and culture, but also provides a focal point in advocating for the cultural voice of videogames and their role as the first truly new artform of the 21st century. We’ve built partnerships with the State Library of Victoria, ACMI, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Emerging Writers’ Festival, and have even more planned for this year and beyond.
But to do the work we believe we can do throughout the year, make the festival sustainable, as well as deliver an amazing and inspirational event in 2012, we need your help.
Your support of Freeplay’s Pozible campaign will enable us to do more in 2012 and beyond - more speakers, more indie games being shown off, more awards, more internationals, and more events between now and Freeplay 2013 aimed at supporting and celebrating Melbourne and Australia’s independent gaming scene. - - On the evenings of September 19 - 21, the Playful Program will once again take games and play out into the streets and bars of Melbourne.
- The weekend of September 22 & 23 sees the Weekend Conference Program return to the State Library of Victoria, exploring the culture of games, their development, and their play through a mix of talks, panels, workshops, and interviews.
- Over the same weekend, the free public Freeplay Arcade and Expo on September 22 & 23 gives players a chance to experience the best in local independent game development, meet their makers, and find out about the skills needed to get started in game making
- On September 20 & 21 at ACMI, Freeplay is running its first ever dedicated Developer Program focusing on essential studio start-up skills & development practices
- Finally, on the evening of September 23, the Freeplay Awards will once again celebrate the best of Australian - and international - independent games.
