Kai Smythe has been creating and performing his own independent theatre, music and film projects for the past six years. Kai started on stage as the Vocalist/Guitarist in heavy metal rock bands ‘Primal Corruption’ and ‘Captain Organtransplant’ in his hometown of Brisbane. After finishing a short film course at TAFE, he moved into filmmaking, writing and directing a number of his own independent short films. He re-located to Melbourne in 2006 where he is currently based. In 2008 Kai was accepted into Victorian College of Arts Bachelor of Film and Television where he spent three years developing his craft. For his final production he created a television pilot for ‘Rented Space’, a sci-fi comedy about a share-house in space, for which he is the writer, director, performer, composer and animator. The show is currently in development and is being pitched to commissioners later this year. With his good friend and colleague Tim Mager, he created ‘In Search of Atlantis’ in 2009, and toured it throughout Australia in 2010. His most recent show ‘Sexytime!’ is a physical comedy based on the history of sexiness, which he co-wrote and performed with Tessa Waters. The show was critically acclaimed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and had a sell out season at the 2011 Melbourne international Comedy Festival. He has most recently finished the premier tour of his first solo show ‘Big Hairy Fun’ and will be debuting in Edinburgh Fringe Festival later this year.
