DART is the title of our upcoming short film to be shot in August and released later this year...
we are audience to theatre everyday...' For centuries storytellers and adventurers haveused their bodies to recreate epic battles, love stories and a people's history! Themovements you make every second of everyday are a performancein itself... DART isan attempt to capture this style of exploratory performance in real time as artist, DominicTaranto, creates a series of abstract expressionistic artwork. LOST FEW will design thesoundtrack live and engage both the performer and musician as the performance / filmingtakes place. A new and alternative documentary style of film directed by Jessie White,DART will question the boundaries of what is performance and how we express emotionbut also comment on how we move in time and space...'
DART is the first, in what will hopefully be a series of short films, produced by Dartworks Art and Design, to be showcased in upcoming local, national and international short film competitions. In collaboration with Dominic Taranto (Producer/Artist/Performer), David Thomson (Music and Sound Designer) & Jess Ramsey (Visual Aid, VJ) togeteher they are LOST FEW with the guidance of Jessie White (Director and Editing).
This project will be the very first time they have collaborated together as a group.
Their aim is to produce a short film that documents the process of Darting.
This new style of performance is a process explored in Dominic's art practice that describes the combining of various mediums into one multidisciplinary piece. Together and separately they have explored the worlds of modern, abstract, surrealist, expressionist art, music and film and as a result wish to document this process and explore the notion that the act of painting is in essence aperformance in itself. David's music, using ambient sounds live from the set and syrup like beats, will be the soundtrack and main stimulant for the performer. A series of paintings will be created on set during the day of filming as the performance takes place. To capture it all Jessie and Jess will document this all on film and edit together a short film that represents the spirit of the piece.
We hope to create the very first documentation of Darting as an art practice in the form of our short film DART. Hope you enjoy!
HOW EXACTLY
The filming of DART will consist of a full one day shoot/performance in August 2012 while being staged in one of Melbourne's many underground and famous (secret) warehouse spaces. Post-production times will vary but we hope to release final cut by end of the year.
PAINTING ELEMENT
On the day Dominic will par-take in 4-5 drip painting activities on a series of full body, large scale canvases. The canvases will create the main elements of our set either upright or on the floor allowing for Dominic to move freely on and around each piece and interact using every part of his body. The colours he uses will attempt to reflect the mood and feeling of his current state of mind as he works. (Pollack: action inspired, Rothko colour inspired)
PERFORMANCE ELEMENT
Dominic will draw upon his skills and practice of contemporary movement & performance to express sensations, memories, emotions and real time reflections on what it is to experience this process as it occurs. As he moves through the space he will paint, this allows for the act of painting to become a documentary by-product of the performance element. Imagine at night writing your name as quickly as possible with a sparkler, it leaves a fleeting clue as to what you have drawn. In the same way Dominic's splatter style of work will hopefully be given physical form as he uses his body as an extension the brush.
MUSIC ELEMENT
As both the painting and performance elements take place so will the sound design/performance element. To inspire and interact with Dominic, LOST FEW's, David will be there recording sounds made from the actual creation and production of the work. These and the 1000's of other pre-recorded electronic and ambient like sounds will be played as the pieces are created, adding a secondary style of performance and soundtrack to the film. David and Dominic's very different mediums will both influence and compliment each other creating a fluid like exchange of ideas and expressions.
FILM ELEMENT
It will be Jessie and her teams sole responsibility to capture as much of this performance as possible while highlighting the individual elements and piece as a whole. The film element again represents a different medium of performance, something that Jessie's experience will allow for the creation of a documentary/music video style short film.
OBJECTIVES
Their objective is simple to state but to get there they need your help!!!
GOAL 1: Raise the funds $2000 or more!
GOAL 2: Complete the project & make an awesome film!
GOAL 3: Submit film into first competition Offset!
http://creativeindustries.vu.edu.au/level17/level17-11-11-offset-festival.html
For the future we hope to begin production and design on a second film by September this year.
Also we hope to create a community and possibly a new genre of performance/film/music/art that showcases the talents and abilities of young artists especially in Melbourne. This is an ongoing exploration into modern art theories and concepts, this will be used as material for post-graduate study for all involved.

Dominic Taranto (artist/performer/producer) DARTWORKS

"I am a 25 year old Creative Arts Industries student at Victoria University in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I am in my final year but have done previous study in Fine Art Painting at Monash University and RMIT. In my creative life so far I have curated and featured in group exhibitions/events including 'Dead House Walking' and more recently 'Into the Red' part of the Big West Festival in 2011. If I had to define my work I would lean towards abstract expressionism encompassing many mediums including painting, performance, installation and have now started to refine my producing skills. I am currently working on a series of 30 acrylic works under the title of 'RelationWeaveLine' which is a symbolic look at the bond that forms between two people over time while on their separate lifepaths. As a producer my latest works are 'Aphrodite's Bordello' and short films 'DART' and 'DARTING', all soon to hopefully be found here on Pozible."
