THE CAMPAIGN

지하 Underground's Sajangnim is on his way to Brisbane with his rag-tag crew of misfits to unpack their shambolic Korean speakeasy that last Summer inhabited the basement of Metro Arts in Brisbane's CBD and is this year setting up shop in West End as part of Brisbane Festival 2012 Under The Radar.

Every night 지하 Underground's staff help Sajangnim tell his story, with no two nights ever exactly the same.

It has long been his dream to record his very own cast album after finding the original soundtrack to Cats on LP in 1989, and while he is in Brisbane, he might just have the chance.

Your financial support of this campaign will go towards recording the 지하 Underground Mini Album, a gay old romp through style, genre, language and culture featuring some of the most loved numbers from Sajangnim's show. Any additional money raised will go towards Sajangnim's dream of making this version of 지하 Underground in Brisbane's West End, the most fabulous yet!

Sajangnim will write you a personal thank-you Post-it and include it as part of 지하 Underground's décor.

Silver Lady (We are the people of the Underground) Single

You will be provided with a Bandcamp link, where you will be able to download Silver Lady's anthem, "We are the people of the Underground" in a multitude of digital formats.

cut<잘라>

A zine (self-published mag) by 지하 Underground's writers, made up of the work's source material in the form of images, poetry and stories. Some zine content is Not Safe For Work (a little naughty).

cut<잘라> Mini Album Edition

A special edition of cut<잘라> featuring song lyrics and photos of 지하 Underground.

Commemorative Badge

A handmade badge featuring original artwork and the words "We are the people of the UNDERGROUND".

Song Cover

Choose any song for Sajangnim and his staff to cover, and they will play it for you live when you visit 지하 Underground. We will contact you by email to arrange your song - let us know two weeks in advance of your visit so that we can prepare. (Ticket to 지하 Underground not included in Reward).

VIP Tickets

You will receive the stipulated number of adult tickets with reserved VIP seating to any available night of the season. Includes one drink on entry for each ticket.

Invitation to Exclusive Preview

You will receive the stipulated number of invitations to the exclusive preview of 지하 Underground. You will also have access to the after party, where you will have the opportunity to meet the team.

(This preview will take place immediately prior to the public season of 지하 Underground).

Original Song

Write to Sajangnim about your experience of the being "underground". No matter how dark or naughty, we will write an original song based on what you send, and perform it when you visit 지하 Underground. You will also have exclusive access to a video clip of the staff performing your song.

All-You-Can-Eat Korean Barbecue

You will receive 4 invitations to an exclusive and authentic all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue with Sajangnim and his staff.
(Vegetarians can be easily accommodated).

지하 Underground House Party

Sajangnim and his staff will invade your home, prepare delicious Korean refreshments and serenade you with live renditions of the music of 지하 Underground.

지하 Underground is a Korean bar that inhabits a unique, temporary, purpose built space positioned in the heart of Brisbane. Once inside, the audience immediately becomes acquainted with 지하 Underground ‘s eccentric Sajangnim and his disparate staff of Koreans and waygooks (foreigners).

지하 Underground’s house band, a ragtag bunch of musicians, gradually takes over the venue’s stage and wind through a mix-tape of gypsy music, traditional Korean opera and Pansori, electro-pop and folk music. What emerges is a bilingual narrative expressed through story and song, exploring cross-cultural relationships and the convergence of countries, languages, genders and cultures.

Directed by interdisciplinary artist Jeremy Neideck and produced by Dave Sleswick of Motherboard Productions, this work draws on the real-life experiences of the cast and creative team, all of who have lived and worked in Seoul and all of who share a mutual dedication to promoting social change through cultural collaboration.

At its core, 지하 Underground is about how love and relationships can meld, change and extend across time, place, languages and genders. It is also about the fluid nature of identity in an ever-shrinking world where our perceptions of geographic and cultural boundaries are constantly evolving. We aim to create an inclusive, immersive and magical world where people from all walks of life can celebrate their differences through music, art and social togetherness.

This work is part of an ongoing collaboration and exchange between Australia and Korea initiated by the work of the late Roger Rynd. His mentorship and legacy has been a major source of inspiration for the team who have been working closely together for several years to develop ways to tell stories and develop a shared performance language that brings the two cultures together.
